Beauregard was in command at First Manassas.

Was Burford the guy you were thinking of? Because he is really the reason the North was able to consolidate and establis themselves at Gettysburg

We were talking about East Calvary Field.
Everyone typically remembers Custer and forgets about David Gregg.

Yes and no. Not to be that guy but Beauregard was superseded in command by Joseph E. Johnston. It was Johnston who made the decision not to pursue the retreating Union army.

The same super genius that ordered Pemberton out of the works at Vicksburg if I am not mistaken.

The objective was for the two forces to combine into one. When Johnston changed his mind, Pemberton reversed course and ran smack dab into Grant's army at Champion Hill.

Johnston sent Pemberton a message that if Haynes Bluff was lost that "Vicksburg would be untenable" and escape with the garrison.

NVC & DPRK say hello...
It takes will to win. Lincoln, Grant, Sherman and a few others were the prime reason the union won.
What happens if Stonewall is at Gettysburg...a loss in Union territory would have been devastating as well as a route to march on DC...
There was a legitimate chance to terms if that happens. The nerve to fight in the north was already waning and Lincoln was losing support.
Now, yeah, the South had no business lasting even that long in that war. Yet there they were...because of Lee and Jackson.

I don’t think so. Take it from Rhett Butler:
LINK
The only way the South could have avoided defeat was if they used guerrila style tactics North Vietnam used, or gotten backing from foreign govt.
Whoever their generals were and conventional warfare tactics wouldn’t have mattered.

Vicksburg had to be held. There was no reason for Pemberton to be sallying forth on a campaign to begin with.
Just a waste of effort supplies and manpower. The entire campaign would have been better served to have prepared for a siege pinning Grant's army at Vicksburg and bleeding him dry with hit and run attacks to his rear until sufficient forces could be brought to bear to break the siege .

Sheridan’s contributions cannot be ignored.

You could say McClellan’s hesitance played a role.

You gentlemen provide a wealth of knowledge. I do hope one day soon to tour a few of the battlefields, especially Gettysburg.
Being near Mobile there are some sites here, some of the very last battles of the war were fought close to where I am right now.

We truly do not understand the breadth of issues that were addressed (or failed to be addressed) during that time period. We are still living with them today.

That we are. I often wonder had Lincoln survived would things have been different, or not, post war.
The issues we have today, it seemed we were making progress, then the wrong set of pols came along. A shame.
