My dad's still got a stainless belt buckle he bought from an inmate back in the 70's.
Some of these guys make some beautiful stuff, and the rodeo is the only place they have to show what they can create.

they are doing time. but they're still people. you take away everything that resembles life and people have nothing to live for. when people have nothing to live for, they don't give a shite about anything anymore. that makes everyone's job more dangerous and life more dangerous for the inmates.

They are. In Angola. That godforsaken place is in the middle of fricking nowhere, surrounded by the river and the Tunica Hills. There are fences around the bunkhouses, but not the prison itself. Even if someone gets across the fenceline, they're not likely to get to the prison's borders and if they do, they're almost certainly not going to survive crossing the river and they're going to get caught if they try to cross the Tunica Hills.
Most people aren't aware of just how MASSIVE Angola actually is. It's about 25% larger than Manhattan (18,000 vs about 14,500 acres). It has a freaking "airport". It's a VFR airstrip, really, but they actually use it sometimes to transport prisoners and have state officials visit.

If they ban the rodeo, they should just put this guy back in there. They will rip him apart, William Wallace style. Most of those guys had only the rodeo to look forward to.

One of my podnuhs was a guard at angola a few years back. Dude has stories for daaaaaaays about shite you wouldn't believe goes on in some of those blocks.
