A 12-year-old boy in Colorado got a five-day suspension for flashing a toy gun across his computer screen during an online art class, according to a report.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said although the teacher thought it was a toy gun authorities still did a welfare check on Isaiah Elliott without parental notification.

“It was really frightening and upsetting for me as a parent, especially as the parent of an African-American young man, especially given what’s going on in our country right now,” Curtis Elliott, Isaiah’s father, told KDVR.

The toy gun was neon green and black with an orange tip featuring the words on the handle: “Zombie Hunter.”

He follows it up with
quote:

“He was in tears when the cops came. He was just in tears. He was scared. We all were scared. I literally was scared for his life,” said Curtis Elliott.

I can see how a parent might tense up in that situation with the tamir rice story still a frequent headline. Fair or not.

I’m confused. Are we supposed to be shitting on the teacher for calling a welfare check for a toy gun or the black dad getting scared when the cops showed up at his house?

I am siding with the dad here, that was retarded to have cops come to your house and kid suspended for a clear toy gun.

Was the kid flashing the gun like he was going to use it or something?

I don't know what, if any, punishment should happen, but there is a difference if the kid knowingly was trying to flash a gun to get a rise or if it was just in the background.

Depending on the area, could have very well been a real gun. Oftentimes kids spray paint them black.

If the teacher thought it could have been real, that’s mandatory reporting territory whatever their personal theories might be.

Yep. The world we live in where school shootings are happening. Teacher can't sit by and not do shite.

I know I wouldn't risk losing my job from some little shite trying to be cute then word spreads that he flashed a gun.

Also, if he did and the other students said “Oh, Billy has a gun,” it pretty much takes care of itself at that point. Best do the paperwork before you get chewed out.

Dad's response should have been, "Nah, I took care of that. Little Billy won't be as much as thinking about a gun in class in the future. AIN'T THAT RIGHT BILLY?"

I usually look at the narrative of the news report, and assume the opposite happened.

For example, a kid had a toy gun on his shelf in his bedroom during a virtual class instruction. The news report would blow it up to something dangerous, and highlight the fact the cops were called. There’s usually a wacko parent of a classmate that claims their kid was scared and scarred by the sight of a gun.

Or, it was some little punk flashing a toy like it was real. The news report would focus on the overreaction of school officials and police over a toy gun.
