A stone age wall discovered beneath the waves off Germany’s Baltic coast may be the oldest known megastructure built by humans in Europe, researchers say.

The wall, which stretches for nearly a kilometre along the seafloor in the Bay of Mecklenburg, was spotted by accident when scientists operated a multibeam sonar system from a research vessel on a student trip about 10km (six miles) offshore.

Closer inspection of the structure, named the Blinkerwall, revealed about 1,400 smaller stones that appear to have been positioned to connect nearly 300 larger boulders, many of which were too heavy for groups of humans to have moved.

The submerged wall, described as a “thrilling discovery”, is covered by 21 metres of water, but researchers believe it was constructed by hunter-gatherers on land next to a lake or marsh more than 10,000 years ago.

While the purpose of the wall is hard to prove, scientists suspect it served as a driving lane for hunters in pursuit of herds of reindeer.

Ancient Germans

It appears even our ancestors had figured out work smart, not hard.

Did the guy that came up with the idea of the wall get to keep all the reindeer or just 70%?

quote:

The angle of the wall, which is mostly less than 1 metre high, changes direction when it meets the larger boulders, suggesting the piles of smaller stones were positioned intentionally to link them up. In total, the wall’s stones are thought to weigh more than 142 tonnes.

You don't think our ancestors (at least one of them) couldve figured out "hey if we put a bunch of rocks together (connecting these bigger rocks) it'll work like an artificial cliffside and we won't have to chase these deer all over the place"?

Nah it would be due to dinosaur and cow farts since the rise in water predates the Industrial Revolution.

They were actually trying to keep the Mexicans out. Early ancestors built the first wall for this, but the Mexican horde kept coming.

The sea levels were almost 400 feet lower 10,000 years ago. There’s a lot out there left to be found.

Due to the earth's axis tilt melting the northern hemisphere glaciers and opening up the transatlantic current most likely.

So trans cause global warming

At first I read this as “10 year old megastructure found off German coast” and I thought oh shite what are those Germans up to now.

Very interesting.
After listening to Randal Carlson speak on this topic, I’m convinced there are potentially hundreds of sites like these all over that were covered after the end of the last ice age .
I like how they had to squeeze in the whole hunter gatherer nonsense.
Look up gobekli tepe that’s dated to at least 12k years and tell me that was the work of hunter gatherers…

Goblekitepe may have been suited to agriculture better than this area in Germany at the time.

Hunter-gatherers still could've planted the things they gathered though much like the Amazon rainforest people did.

I don't think hunter-gatherer implies negative connotation

When I hear them call them hunter gatherer’s, to me they are implying a primitive culture.
Having advanced language, a giant megalithic city built with the understanding of astronomy is far from picking berrys lol

I used to feel this way but once I realized the 'gatherers' were still spreading their crops as they seasonally migrated that is still pretty advanced LINK
