The iconic dance-hall painting seen in the credits of the 1970s sitcom Good Times sold at a Christie’s auction in New York City Thursday for a record-breaking $15.2 million.
As noted by The Los Angeles Times, Ernie Barnes’ adored 1976 acrylic-on-canvas piece known as The Sugar Shack appeared in the fifth and sixth seasons of the classic 1970s sitcom. Marvin Gaye also used the painting as the cover art for his classic hit album, “I Want You.” According to Christie’s auction house, the painting sold for 76 times its estimate of $150,000 to $200,000 and had 22 bidders interested. It was sold to Houston-based energy trader Bill Perkins after 10 minutes of bidding. Per The New York Times, the price was “more than double that of a Cézanne in the sale, and more than a Monet and a de Kooning.”[link=(According to Christie’s auction house, the painting sold for 76 times its estimate of $150,000 to $200,000 and had 22 bidders interested. Freakonomics did 3 episodes around (beginning of December) on how corrupt the art world is and how the industry works. Great insight.

I do not get art.. I went and saw Monet lilies .. sat there looking at it and just admitted I suck at art appreciation… I do not like “good times”… but then again Monet looked like something you would get at a starving artist sale.. felt them same as I looked at the Mona Lisa also …
But I do like the blue dog paintings… go figure?

And just think if a white man had painted that it would be banned from existence for racist sterotypes.

Agreed, I'd love to have that hanging on my wall, if I could buy it from Target or Amazon for about $25.

I enjoy looking at art the times i have been around a bunch of it and find it interesting what people create but i have never understood the desire to purchase insanely expensive art or paintings.
