They wanted mac jones in the first. Payton isn't sold on jameis.
If both Mac and Jameis are a good fit for our offense and had a decent year this year you’d have to pay one close to 30M a year moving forward for one and you’d have the other for 4 more years for a fraction of that.

It's not sarcasm. You just named only a handful in the history of the league.
It's super rare to hit on a legit starting qb outside of the top 10 (much less in the top 10). Even rarer just in the first round, and so on and so forth.
The odds are extremely small.
Edit:
That doesn't mean you never try, especially if you really like a certain one.
But it comes with the expectation that he may not ever amount to anything other than career backup. But it's a cheap dollar scratch off to potentially hit big, vs. an expensive arse ticket in the first (or even second) with not much better odds.

Flipside is you would have had to mortgage a good bit of premium draft stock to get one, who surely isn't a known commodity.
We can argue how good Winston is or isn't, but you pretty much know what he can do talent wise. All depends where his head is at.

How often do QBs inside of the 1st round work out?

Nah, I could name a lot more. The ones I named are still playing or have recently retired. They are/were among the best.
Historically there are plenty who were drafted outside the first who were successful just as there are plenty of first round flops.
According to Wikipedia, 11 current starters were drafted outside the the first round.

A great point. Draft day is all about excitement so of course Lawrence, Wilson, Lance, Fields, and Mac are all franchise saviors.
If two make it to their 2nd contract with their drafted team, I’ll be shocked.

Some would say you should take a QB and linemen every year on day 3. Cuz you never know.

Being a starter doesn't make you a successful nfl qb. There are plenty of starters that struggle for 1-3 years, may or may not bounce around as backups and spot starters, and disappear.
Hell look at most of the Jets, Browns, and Bears qbs over the years.

I identified a third of the league’s starters and 3 or 4 future hall of famers. The original post said it is rare.
It’s not.
It’s not.

Over how many drafts and how many qbs taken? It's rare.
Posted on 5/1/21 at 4:23 pm to bonethug0180
It’s not that rare no matter how you spin it. The saints have drafted one first rounder in the history of the franchise.
Maybe your definition of rare is different than mine.

Fill the holes with day 3 picks? You need to review our day 3 history and get back to me on that because the Saints tend to draft training camps cuts on Day 3.
As do pretty much all teams
Until you have the qb it doesn’t much matter and you aren’t getting the franchise qb day three either soooooo

Book doesn't bother me but it seems like we could have gotten him later
This is such a stupid assumption to make. How do you know how other teams have them ranked? Not everyone goes by kipers big board
