Would you rather:

A) Have our allotment of 9 draft picks, in accordance with our current circumstances (#13, #31, #44, #75, #78, etc).

B) Be able to take any two players in this year's draft, but no one else.

If you chose option B, who would you take? We obviously have more than two positions of need, so which two players do you think would best satisfy those needs?

I would probably take Leonard Williams and Dante Fowler and call it a day.

B. And I'd take Williams and Fowler and move on to the 2015 season.

If we were to keep our 9 picks, the chances are in favor of only 2 or 3 panning out into starters anyway. and maybe 1 turning into a superstar. Might as well grab the 2 highest rated defensive players and take a higher chance of getting 2 defensive superstars/studs out of this draft.

A for me. Hopefully you end up with 5 starters out of the 9 picks. Maybe an all pro or 2.

A. Use your skills and get multiple players who can contribute. Plus as a fan it would be great to see saints picks throughout the draft instead of 2 and done

Not a fan of trading draft picks. These picks are how you build a champion. Take a look at that 2006 class. That class can be directly attributed to us winning in 2009. Front office just needs to do their homework.

I take this option
quote:

A) Have our allotment of 9 draft picks, in accordance with our current circumstances (#13, #31, #44, #75, #78, etc).

this is a ridiculous question. There are tons of excellent players who are drafted in the mid to later rounds; quite a few out-perform the top picks in each draft.

The way looking at it, is we're trading our 2-7 (3-7 in a normal draft) round picks for the 2 best players in this draft, and both at areas of need. I'd rather take my chance of getting two potential game changers on the defensive side of the ball, then hoping our 3,5,6 round picks MIGHT pan out in to decent contributors.

You sound like a filthy lawyer. We don't much care for your kind round these parts.

I would take the two players. Leonard Williams and Danny Shelton (combined 16 sacks last season). DT isn't a huge need, but those two with Cam and Junior on the outside would be insane, and we'd be a Jordan extension away from having potentially the best DL in the NFL over the next 4 years. If Jordan disappoints this season, we could let him walk and let the versatile Williams take over his role.

Damn

So humber and thorn at lb'er with some parys thrown in.
And tim and jari as our starting guards.

And so and so as our #3 cb.
With colston and cooks as our 1 and 2?

We still have Colston and a couple promising WRs, we can afford to wait another year to pick one in the draft. You'd have Fowler to replace Parys. Sure our ILB would still be meh but with that defensive front and our starting secondary, we'd be ok.

POTENTIAL HOPE MIGHT --> applies to the #1 overall to the last guy taken. Nothing is guaranteed.

2 best players in the draft? Williams in the consensus best defensive player, but many pundits are back and forth over the next best end. There is a laundry list of DL busts taken in the first few picks. I dont think Williams or Fowler are any more of a guarantee than any of the other guys we would be able to take at 13 and 31

I would be worried about our WR's and OL depth.

Haralson is solid, but we practically never have that LOLB position on the field.

I think someone will step up as an adequate nickel CB.

The OL/WR worries are legit, but with Lewis, Browner, and Byrd (DON'T FORGET ABOUT HIM!!111) being a fantastic secondary trio + the hypothetical insane DL getting to the QB on the reg, I wouldn't be terribly concerned with two or three subpar back-7 players. The rest of the talent would cover up our deficiencies.

Not only that, but think about the value placed on the top 2 draft picks. Ignore TB with Winston, how much of our draft do you think it would take to trade up to #2 to get Williams? Definitely #13,31, and either 44 or both 3rd round picks. So not only do we get that pick, but we get #3 as well, which would eat into both this year's draft and the top of next year's at least. And that's taking the clear cut #1 Winston off the board altogether. Anyone interested in moving on from Brees in a year or two (I'm not) would place even more value on the "pick any two" option. It's really not even a debate IMO.

You're telling us to potentially take an all-pro DT/DE (Williams) and all-pro OLB (Fowler)

or

9 picks that could net you 3 pro bowl caliber and a couple of starters. Assuming you hit on 5/9.

with the way our roster is constructed, those mid round picks will be valuable. Generally you can find starting caliber guards and LBs in that round, as well as a WR if you pick the right guy to fill a role.

That's not even getting into the biggest reason why it would be dumb. Being in cap hell, we need as many guys on cheap contracts as we can get. So maybe they dont start this year, but maybe they do in a year or 2, and we can let other guys walk that otherwise would command a big deal.

cap for 2 guys would be a lot less than 9, if 5 of them turned into viable starters. But that wasn't part of the scenario.
