If Drew actually ended up in Miami? Were there other potential options he publicly said he was interested in? I don't remember specifically.

Aside from Free Agency... could have changed the draft. Could have been forced to look at qb's or trade down from that spot. Vince Young, Jay Cutler, and Matt Leinart were the qb names that year.

This! I believe there is an interview back in the 2008-2009 time frame that stated he was talking to the Cowboys about trading for Romo before we brought in Brees.

I always heard it was Romo. And I think Payton would have done well with him too.

Before we signed Drew I was legit terrified we were going to make the mistake of drafting Matt Leinart. At the time everyone thought Reggie was going #1 and I was hoping we'd take AJ Hawk.

weren't the Saints looking at AJ Hawk if Reggie didn't drop to #2?

I fully expect it would have been Romo.. He had the inside on it and I'm sure draft picks would have been thrown.

The other thread said Josh McCown had a meeting lined up if Brees didn't work out

Yeah to that point Romo had yet to throw a pass for Dallas in the regular season, and Payton was going to push hard to trade for him.

pretty sure i recall people saying dallas were not going to entertain trading romo. but what they said now doesn't mean or not mean much of anything.

It would’ve been either Romo or Cutler. I remember after the Draft they asked Payton which QB he liked the most and he said Cutler.

Payton’s backup plan was Tony Romo, who was a 3rd stringer/practice squad player for Dallas at that time. We wouldve gotten Romo if we didnt get Brees.

Im really glad we got Brees. Romo was a stat machine but not really a big game winner. Brees shines the brightest in his big games. His Super Bowl performance was awesome. The drive where we got the go ahead TD was magical.
