Unitas
Graham
Baugh
Luckman
Starr

Staubach
Tarkenton
Namath
Bradshaw
Stabler

Montana
Marino
Elway
Fouts
Moon

Favre
Aikman
Kelly
Young
Bledsoe

Brady
Manning
Brees
Rodgers
Roethlisberger

I bring it up because Bill Polian recently said he believes the last 15 years of QB play may be the best he's ever seen, naming Manning, Brady & Brees.

It was also kind of difficult for me to group an "era" considering some of these guys careers spanned multi-eras, like Elway & Favre and arguably played their best ball later on.

Will hold ALL of the records when it over. The last 20 years have been the Golden Age of NFL QB play.

Can't compare.....each group is great in their own right. The game has changed drastically over time so not an even comparison.

I don’t see how you could compare one era to another.

But Brees is going to be the all time leader in many passing categories, and TB will have the most rings. I don’t think you can argue against any other generation.

I'd say 80's era was better qbs. last 15 years just looks so good bc of rules to help passing game.

I think brees, manning, and Brady have been phenomenal.

That being said, the Marino, Montana, Elway era was better.

It was a completely different era where it was harder to throw, yet they had numbers and efficiency that would be elite in today's game.

But then we'd need to add Elway to the 90's group, too. All of his championships came at the end of his career.

Due to the offensive-oriented rules changes and greater emphasis on passing proficiency, the current QB era is better statistically but I err to the quoted 80s-early 90s era: the era of Joe Montana and Dan Marino, so many moments and games that defined the league and are still being referred to today like The Drive, The Catch, etc, the first realization of the intent of the seminal 1978 rules changes in terms of offensive stats, QBs still played under tons of defensive pressure to an extent compared to today so the window was smaller and consequently accuracy wasn't as brilliant across the board and physical toughness was a romanticized QB attribute, awesome vintage uniforms, first instance multiple NFL games could be consumed per TV with the advent of cable so opportunity for greater exposure, so many tough and athletic QBs with rocket arms this era was great

Only if he plays longer than Brady or the both retire he same year.
If Brees reviews first, that fricker will linger just to break Brees marks

Agreed. The records set should be taken with a grain of salt. They football was played way more conservatively back in the day. That being said, I wonder how Unitas would do with the way modern football is played.

Probably break every passing record and perform like a more athletic Peyton Manning since he called his own plays

You need to define "better" better.
The first group were the toughest, by far.

Elway's probably the best QB to ever play the position

Marino, Fouts, and Moon are among the best pure passers to ever play the sport, you're familiar with Air Coryell and that Run and Shoot Oiler offense huh?

Montana did Montana things, one of the most accurate QBs to ever play way ahead of his time with that West Coast system

Btw all these QBs played in the era of Lawrence Taylor where defensive players could still maul guys to a degree so it kinda makes all that awesomeness even more impressive

That good enough for ya?

That's a stout group.

Protect them like today and this could be the group everyone would pick

Mobility was not a strength for Unitas. Plus those shoes, for goodness sake. But he had a hell of an arm and was smart and tough.

no name in these lists screams that more than Sammy Baugh.

The man has 41 defensive interceptions and 21 defensive fumble recoveries. He also has a career punting average of 45.1 YPK over 13 seasons (338 punts). The man played both ways and punted all at a high level.

That reminds me of arguments made about Babe Ruth being the greatest baseball player ever. Sure, a few guys have hit more HRs, but Babe Ruth was a also a World Series-winning pitcher for the Red Sox.

I look at the first group with Unitas and Baugh and am tempted to say those guys were the best ever. The most recent group with Brady, Brees and Manning are next.

Groups 2 and 4–no way

Group 1 spans 40 years. Seems kinda ridiculous.

3 and 5 are equally good.
