What a load of crap..After this season, there definitely needs to be an asterisk on the top 5, but it doesn't need to go by Brees' name!

1. Drew Brees
2. Tom Brady
3. Dan Marino *
4. Drew Brees
5. Kurt Warner

* Only person on this list to never win a superbowl

Unlike Marino, Brees is doing it with liberal rules that leave defenses playing with one hand tied behind their back. In effect, Brees' record will be severely watered down. So much so, that it almost deserves an asterisk.

The writer has a point but it's not drews fault he plays in this era. The rules of the NFL with an offensive bias make it hard to watch though.

There was also no salary cap or free agency in 84 which meant some teams stockpiled talent while a bunch of teams sucked arse.

This meant you could pile up huge stats against teams you dominated in talent and you have dynasties who were breaking records while most of the league was garbage.

IMO breaking most records is difficult in the post salary cap free agency period b/c of personnel acquisition restrictions.

Well..since we're in a "hulk" mood around here apparently..

I imagine the post game interview will go something like this:

Reporter: Mr Brees, what went through your mind when you finally eclipsed the passing yard record?

DB: BREES SMASH!!!!!

Not buying it. I think the defenses are much more athletic these days and the QB is always under duress regardless of the rules. Brees still takes hits and these numbers require no asterik.

Only if the asterisk is to indicate that Brees took to the bench in the second half.

This is not to say that Brees isn't a brilliant talent on his way to the Hall of Fame. He is. Brees. Carpet. Red. Roll it out. It's just that his record is a shell of Marino's.
And yes, it deserves an asterisk.

The idea of the asterik is stupid, but so are some of your comments like this. If defenses were less athletic then so were offenses, so its a wash. The rules are even more in favor of offense now, but were liberalized just a few years before Marino set the record.

And defensive schemes are more complex now than in 1984

This happens when people cannot let things go and miss their favorite players being the stars and recognition. I'm sorry but the game has changed but I don't buy this bs about an asterisk. Yards are yards but just bc it isn't the old days of simple offenses and less rules doesn't mean you should punish the player. If drew cheated the game somehow then there would be an asterisk but this guys argument is dumb
