He gave up on Jeff Blake too soon in favor of a young Aaron Brooks who showed promise. Blake got hurt, but was a good QB imo that could throw 1 of the most beautiful long bomb throws you ever wanna see. But Aaron Brook replaces him in a game that Blake got hurt in, and looks really good and composed for such a young QB and the rest is history.
I remember the next year in pre-season, it wasn't even a fair fight. Blake would only get in games with the second and third team Offensive Line and was set up for failure, in which the starting job was handed to Brooks.

3. Some really bad drafts and trades. Haslett was usually solid in the first but had a lot of misses outside of it. 4. Being defensive minded it's interesting how bad his defenses seemed to get and how quickly but makes sense when you trade for Tebucky Jones, Jonathan Sullivan, draft Josh Bullocks, Cie Grant, Courtney Watson among others
For a former NFL linebacker he had no ability to judge talent for the position. Grant, Watson, Sedrick Hodge… all picked in top 3 rounds.

What seemed to be Jim Haslett's downfall?
Aaron Brooks and the fact that he was a former linebacker that couldn't spot LB talent to save his life

Losing La'Roi and Sammy Knight which caused them to use a ton of assets to replace them with Jonathan Sullivan and Tebucky Jones.

Jim Haslett's downfall
Fantastic offense, no defense.

playing injured Brooks those last 3 games when Delhomme was healthy and hot. After that, he was done. Mark Fields didn't do him any favors either.

the same issue as with dennis allen, they are both good DC, that should have stayed DC, because they are terrible head coaches

not only that, but he made his famous comment about it saying no team is going to the SB with Jake Delhomme as their starting QB.
and the very next year, Jake Delhomme signed with carolina and took the panthers to the SB in his first year there

Standing by Brooks when Jake was sitting on the bench ready to take a team to the superbowl

This was his downfall. He had the arrogance that he knew better than the fans when everyone could plainly see that Delhomme was a much better option than an injured Brooks. Jake would have definitely got us into the playoffs.
Haslett looks even more incompetent once Jake led a team to the superbowl while Brooks fizzled out of the league in no time. Just proved the fans knew more than the coach in that instance.

Still blows my mind that Haslett and company just let Glover go and didn’t even try to resign him. He wanted bigger DT’s. One of the more egregious moves in saints history. We could face drafted Polamalu instead of Sullivan if we kept Glover.

Hand and Glover were so awesome. That 17 sack season from glover is among the best seasons I’ve ever seen from anyone (in terms of guys o watched week in week out). Third down was loud on the dome that year and glover consistently delivered all year long.

still can’t believe they missed the playoffs in 2002. They were 9-4 and only had to win ONE of the last 3 games to make the playoffs, and didn’t.
Played the worst team in the league in the Bengals last game of season and still couldn’t win one.
Pathetic.

Ron Zook leaving after 2001 was the iceberg I think.
