Because there is no one on the roster that you can really trust to be a starting caliber player at an important position and at an important position for protecting Brees. Center. No top end talent. Easton is a big question mark and Tom and Clapp are nothing more than back of the roster players that people have a hard on for for no reason...until they prove otherwise.

You can’t go 4 years $24 mil and then use your first pick on a backup center, especially when you got Tom and Clapp. As mediocre as they are their versatility in relation to their cap number provides some value

You have Peat on his last year of his deal and Armstead as your 2nd highest paid player who can’t stay on the field. You need a tackle if you’re forward thinking

but not too interested in a rookie OT protecting Brees’s blind side.

Which would never happen as long as Ram and Peat are here

He’s been hurt a lot of the last 2 years. Not convinced he’s going to stay healthy or perform like we need. I hope I’m not wrong but that’s why I put center first

Drafting at 62 I have to say what is historically available at that POSITION.

Typically

1) Guard/Center
2) Safety
3) Developmental DT prospect
4) Solid Blocking TE

At 62 you can still get what some would consider the 4th or 5th best guard available in the draft. Obviously not a 1st year starter, but should be able to provide some late snaps during the season and look to fill a key role in years 2-5.

Safety will see the 3rd or 4th best true safety on the board or maybe the 5th best Safety/Slot Corner type of Safety.

62 is a great spot to find those interior DT prospects. In most cases they are just short of the measurables for 1st round grades. Typically 6-3 295-305 range and runs the 5.5 instead of a 5.3 or 5.4.

Bottom line this guy has to make your roster. He has to be a team contributor at least for years 2-4.

Ya, when Armstead gets hurt, Peat will kick out and then we’re even more atrocious on the interior.

Get a top 3 C/OG in the draft and hopefully he wins the job. Easton can be our Kelemete and start at G next season.

Easton pass blocked well at G two years ago? Then missed a season? Had back surgery? Yikes. There are 3 nobodies 7th round or undrafted slated to play C taking over for former pro bowler Unger. I don’t think that’s a good idea, especially with Brees’s age.

Also, Payton listed interior line as a need in offseason. Listed Peat and Unger’s contract status as reasons. That was before Easton was signed and before Unger officially retired.

I get the idea of OT being more important if you’re thinking future with Armstead always being injured and Peat’s contract coming up...but afraid of an injury making our interior line a sieve this season (see Rams game).

Agree with you in that those are usually your value positions at the end of the second round.

We need to draft the best available olineman period in the 2nd. Peat is probably gone after this year and it takes at least a year to groom lineman. Plus our OL was beat to shite by the playoffs last year and premium backup talent is needed.

There's tons of impact dline still left in fa and we should sign whatever one gives us the best value, Suh, Wilkerson, Liuget, Jernigan, Ansah, any one of those could help soften losing Rankins for half the year.

1. QB
2. QB
3. QB
4. QB
5. QB

Brees has fallen off and will retire after this season. Teddy sucks. We need a QB of the future or we'll be back to the Aints years.

Let me begin by saying this year's picks are all depth or developmental pics. I don't see any starters right away. And they shored up alot of areas in free agency. Here's my 5 positions I think they should address in the draft:
Center
Tackle
Def End
Def Tackle
Tight End
-
Do we have a pure center on the roster? You can never have enough linemen on either side and our new tight end is on the wrong side of 30. Keep in mind outside of a very late 2nd, these pics are all 5th, 6th or 7th round selections. They'll be lucky to hit the practice squad.

Not sure why everyone keeps putting de as a need? We just burned 2 first round picks on one last year and a 3rd round on one the year before. That's a lot of draft capital already and we signed Mario Edwards to a decent contract. Time for Hendrickson to show what he's got. DT is more of a need.

I'd say O-Line is the most likely position to be drafted with the 2nd round pick.

Obviously, we could go another direction if 1 of our top targets falls to us. Almost every position should be a possibility if our guy is there. RB, FB, K, P, & LS are really the only positions that I would say are highly unlikely in the 2nd round. I can't really see us going CB in the 2nd either.

Ireland just said they have 4 or 5 players they think will be there at 62 that they like. They put up there board and has like 39 players rated as 2nd round and all the coaches fighting for their guy.
