I have an issue with getting so enamored with a player that you trade away pics. Are they not good enough to find talent at the next draft pic. So, if any of the trade up pics fail, you automatically have 2 pic failures. This has been my problem with Loomis and Peyton over the years. I would rather see Loomis and Peyton learn to trade down and find talent. Let's hope these pics make the team and contribute.

Just for fun and b/c I'm a dork I went back and looked at previous years draft grades I had.

2013: B- We got Armstead who I feel is elite, Vaccaro who I think is good, and Jenkins is about average. I would give it a C now though

2014: I gave a C- I would give a D- now. Only reason not F is b/c of Cooks.

2015: I have a A- I feel 2015 was our best draft we've had to be honest.

2016: I gave a B Loved the draft, just not many picks.

No one is looking for, or expects, starters in the 7th round. Vadal had a bad grade, he's too slow, sorry.

Reading the Saints comments on guards they just didn't grade many of them very high in this years draft and the one's they did didn't fall to them.

Its their grades and all you can ask of them is to stick to it and not reach.

Thank God we seem to have really done well in getting a great group of UDFA

People get so enamored about lsu (vadal) that they totally ignore we got a udfa guard (turner) who has a higher upside... Alexander's biggest downside is one of the major reasons he would be bad here. People forget how athletic nicks and Evans were in their prime...

I used Vadal as an example, there were many other players that were a better fit that who we drafted.

Saints fans often forget how important guard play is for this offense. At our best, we had two large, road grader, beast of guards. Neither Nicks or Evans were polished pass protectors. They were big bodies guards that could move people.
This UDFA guard that many are pinning their hopes on isn't that.

Not trying to piss on the excitement but the Saints have really struggled the past number of years in the draft and the talent level has dropped. We needed picks IMHO. I like the first three guys they drafted but it's gonna take more that three players to turn this thing around.

Yes it will.

That's why we added a former 1st round pick to rotate in at DT. Its also why we added three LB'ers to the squad in FA. We also brought in a safety from the CFL to compete for a role. And its why we added a big play TE in Fleener.
We also in picking up Landon got perhaps the best road grading guard in the draft. Needs a lot of work in pass protection.

And disagree on Evans and Nicks not excelling at pass protection.

These two were the best for several years and earned their "highest paid" monikers.

Not out of college, they were far from polished but they developed incredibly well.

Yeah, we brought in a bunch of players via FA but that cost much more $$$$$$ than what it cost to pay first year contracts Plus the guys we brought in at DL are questionable. The LBs are serviceable.

You build a team through the draft, not FA because of the $$$ cost.
Saints aren't doing that.

Thought the draft was subpar, but killed it after the draft. Fantastic job in UDFA. Solid B+/A-

I cannot fathom how people think this was a good draft. We might have 1 multi-year starter from this draft and that is if Rankins is legit.

If you don't see Thomas as an instant contributor, you haven't been paying attention.

I agree that 3 players isn't a lot, but 3 could definitely change the team. The argument is we don't trade, we could go from 3 high snap players to 2 and a bunch of question marks which us just as questionable, if not more.

The only move I would have liked was whitehair over Thomas, but they had a contingency plan so I can't fault them for that.

Onyemata over billings people hate, but when you look at the medical (spinal surgery) and his potential, it reminds me a lot of Jenkins. Also what's the most important body part of any lineman, their backs. You see it with any lineman, once their backs become a question mark it is never the same.

Then you disagree with every single pre draft ranking of Rankins, Thomas and Vonn.

Congrats your a breed apart

Pre draft rankings don't mean to much. It's basically a hype meter. If they really near something no one would ever be a bust.

How can a "pick" fall to them when they keep trading up. When you keep trading your pics away, you don't have a pick for them to fall to. The Saints need a logistician in their draft room, maybe give them a speech prior to the draft.

Trading up once in a draft in which you had less than 7 pics you can't get higher than a C grade.
Trading up TWICE in a draft in which you had less than 7 pics you can't get higher than a D grade.
Three years from now grade this draft again.
I WR Thomas is average, but Reed is a beast, then the draft grade will drop. If the opposite occurs, then bump up the grade.
UDFA's should be graded separately.
Saints get an A on UDFAs.
Saints should have been able to get 4-5 starters with picks in Round 1-5 in this draft.
