IMO, there is no way we don't sign him back. The franchise tag cost is still low for him, DA loves him and we have absolutely no one to replace him.

100% chance he stays.

You can't just find safeties like him.

Da's defense doesn't run the same without him. They run a 2 safety shell most of the time. He is very important to that.

It's cheaper to tag Marcus than it would be to find a comparable safety on the market, draft.

He is very important for our defense. Dude is arse at tackling, but he is one of the best coverage safeties in the league. It would definitely impact us pretty negatively if we don’t re-sign him. I think we will pony up and pay him.

What does he do that, you guys as fans see that makes him elite. All i see is a PFF score.
He does not cover anybody in man coverage, like ever.
He cannot tackle.
His greatest attribute is lining up 20yards from the line of scrimmage and playing centerfield.
It is much easier to coach a safety to play deep center than it is to coach the man coverage, and you cannot coach physicality into a player that has none because that is all mentality.

I don't hate him, but I simply do not think he is worth the money he will command, especially considering our cap situation. Marcus is estimated to earn around $13.5M/yr, whereas somebody like PJ Williams makes about $2.5M. PJ is not great on the perimeter in man coverage, but he is capable in the slot and he also tackles well and forces fumbles. For my money I would tab him to replace Marcus and coach him to play deep center, which I'm sure he can already pretty much do.

Saints were close to an extension last season, but ran out of time so Mickey tagged him

He will actually come up as an extra corner at times and help lock down the receivers.

he’s a free safety, who gives a frick? He cover his zone better than any safety in the game

Somehow was the 3rd leading tackler on one of the leagues best defenses

This makes zero sense

Y’all love to have a top defense, but criticize every individual defensive player sans Demario Get a clue. There’s a reason every fanbase is clamoring for their team to sign Williams

He said he was trying not to get a penalty.

Makes no sense but that’s what he said.

One of the coaches, maybe SP, confirmed this. They talked a lot on the sideline about making sure not to give a cheap PI 2-3 plays prior. They really harped on it, and MW was so focused on that instruction he did not consider the game situation where the PI would have been better there to force a 50 yard FG

$70 million OVER the cap, and this is without either Williams or Armstead

Armstead actually has a $13M cap hit if not extended due to voidable years, so good chance he gets extended

If it was any other coach other than DA (and Glenn) I would expect MW to be gone. But, I think they make it happen.

Latt has a 15M roster bonus that can be spread out over the 5 years left which would save $12M
Ram has $8.7M roster bonus, save $6M
AK has $6M that can save about $5M
Taysom has a $9M that would save $7.2M
That's $30M cleared just looking at the roster bonuses (which ML tends to have automatic triggers in the contract to spread the cap hits)

Doesn't include them extending Jordan's to add voidable years (made a comment about playing 3 more years), and them reworking/extending some of the other guys with big cap hits. They only have 29 guys under contract for 2023 (half of the # under contract for 2022), so I would expect them to rework some deals to add a few more years and increase that

Oh shoot, that's right. I looked it up, I thought teams could only tag a guy once. But it looks like it's up to 3 times with each tag going up in salary.

How does it make zero sense? You saying it's easier to coach the mental toughness and attitude of physicality than it is to coach zone concepts for a FS? Big disagree with you on there.

Only person on defense I criticized was M.Williams, in a thread about M.Williams on whether or not he's worth $12+M/yr to re-sign.
Also I'll repeat what I said, I don't hate him, I just that I don't think he's worth $12+M/yr and I don't think that he's the key cog of our defense that you are making him out to be

It's BS. He completely avoids Diggs. Diggs jumped straight up and Williams is closing in on him, stops his own momentum, and moves out the way.

You can't coach the physical gifts it takes to cover the field MW does

And nobody gives a flying frick about physicality like you're posting. This isn't 1980s dinosaur ball

This! Let another team overpay for a soft centerfielder.

SFP dude you've got some of the worst takes on this site across all boards, I hardly see how you feel smart enough to call anyone an idiot

It takes speed and preparation/coaching to cover the field for your zones according to the called defense. Sure instincts are involved, M.Williams has some, but is it wort the money, I don't think so. You really think there are other NFL caliber safeties that cannot occupy deep center?

I believe a lot of people care about his physicality or lack thereof considering he's made 2 of the biggest bonehead plays we've ever seen and both were due to his lack of physicality.
