I wanted him too but Jones is a big medical risk, USC didnt want the guy to ever play again because of his neck. Bottom line is Vaccoro was the safer pick.
Maybe. I just have a bad taste in my mouth about it. I'll go brush my teeth.

You don't just draft the position because it's a better gamble,
you need a sean taylor to justify taking a safety in the 1st round, especially the first half

If a guy like Mingo or Jordan was around then it's worth the gamble.
i'd hope so. those are top-5 talents

If we were dead set on taking a safety, then I'm fine with Vaccaro...and that looks exactly like what the situation was.
But I, like most saints fans on here seem to know that a solid pass rush can make mediocre DB's look like pro bowlers...and it's just disappointing that we didn't attempt to use the first round pick to improve the pass rush.
That being said, on to round 3. Maybe we'll get some help there.

if you're playing the "i'm ignorant, they know all" angle, then i can respond with this:
were they not more informed when they made terrible DB evaluatiosn in the past? what about their track record of drafting DBs makes you confident in their evaluation abilities?

Those were other D-coordinators

How can you be so quick so dismiss Jones when the only LB on our current roster who has ever even played in a 34 is Butler? Wilson played it in college but he was an ILB. Jones was the two time leading sacked in the SEC dude. I'm not saying that automatically makes him an NFL star but you can't sit here and dismiss that on one hand and try to tell me Wilson, Galette, and Butler are all of a sudden going to become sack machines.
I never claimed Wilson, Galette, and Butler are going to be sack machines. It's my opinion that they have better measurables to play that position in the NFL than Jones.
Here's a top 10 list of sack leaders from 2005 in the SEC. How many are great players in the NFL?
1. Eric Norwood* 29 2006 2009 South Carolina
2. Jarvis Jones* 28 2009 2012 Georgia
3. Greg Hardy* 26 2006 2009 Mississippi
4. Antonio Coleman* 24 2006 2009 Auburn
5. Jake Bequette* 24 2008 2011 Arkansas
6. Melvin Ingram* 22 2007 2011 South Carolina
7. Jadeveon Clowney* 21 2011 2012 South Carolina
8. Derrick Harvey* 20 2005 2007 Florida
9. Justin Houston* 20 2008 2010 Georgia
10. Carlos Dunlap* 20 2007 2009 Florida

Not with the limited amount of talent at the top of this draft.

If I was playing that I fricking would have said that.
What I said applies to you and everyone else here about the level of info they have vs what you, I, Brett and anyone else here has.
I've said I would have taken JJ. I'm I still playing ignorant?
Everyone knows about our poor drafting on the D-side.
What the hell do we do?
Two options: bitch and hope for the best or accept the pics and hope for the best.
Option 3 is buy the team yourselves and make your own picks
Using your argument that we suck at drafting def. then drafting JJ would have been a suck move

So you're saying that leading the league in sacks is a bad thing now? Alright man

Are you confident in their pass rusher evaluations, if the pick would have been Jones?

Everyone knows in any scheme in the NFL you need a pass rush or your doomed to fail.
But this is at least what I think we have at olb. I don't know how these guys will hold up in coverage or against the run, but the one thing we know Butler, Tez and Junior can do is rush the QB.

I don't hate the pick. I actually like Vaccaro. I would have just rathered a different scenario.

No I'm saying it's not a direct indicator of how you will perform in the NFL, especially as a pass rush specialist with limited speed.

I don't hate the player. I'm glad we got him, but I was hoping for something else. Obviously the staff liked him more than any of us did.
Here's an tidbit from the Mike Triplett article:
To me this screams Harper replacement. You just can't have an in the box safety who can't cover anymore. The TE's are too athletic. The game has changed. Harper is a dinosaur.

Payton explained that part of the reason for Vaccaro's lack of interceptions was because he was used so often in coverage against slot receivers in nickel coverage. In fact, Payton said the Saints had to dig to find tape of Vaccaro sitting back as a true safety.

yeah, the days of a in the box safety are numbered. If Harper is still used, I'd imagine he won't be asked to cover much.
but we can't just cut Harper, right? I'm a little confused about how the cap works. I'm not really into that stuff.

This. Every year is relative. Hence why two guards went in the top ten this year.

If Vaccaro isn't on a Pro Bowl roster in the next 3-4 years, consider this a wasted pick. You don't choose a safety at 15 to be an average starter.
Don't like the pick at all. First time he gets burned people may set the Superdome on fire.
