now think about your average nfl players intelligence. half are probably on a 10th-12th grade level of education at the most

Do you guys avoid going to the beach and being shirtless in fear that a gay guy might glance in your general direction?

Do you just assume that every gay guy automatically wants to assault you sexually?

I don't get the issue here.

I agree with Vilma as far as the acceptance among other players. I personally don't care who's next to me, and I am certain there might have been a homosexual in my locker room in some phase of my career as a football player, but because people don't bring it up no one thinks its a big deal. Being in that culture, I can tell you a homosexual will be picked on - for the sole reason that everyone in a football locker room is subject to being teased. You have to give it as good as you get it, and someone who comes out and parades it to the world before draft day is just broadcasting that he'd make a big deal about being picked on in the locker room.

Perhaps the Phins should draft him and they should have him play against Richie Incognito in Oklahoma drills... I'm sure it'll end well.

That's not the point. That's being shirtless in public.

not dressing and showering in the nude with a gay man.

Im not even a homophobe. But i know a ton of people that wouldnt be cool with it.

I was with you till right here - I don't think someone secure enough to put everything out in the open is the kind of guy who will be over-sensitive to some friendly hazing.

Fair enough. I see now we're talking about the NFL community at large rather than you personally. Apologies.

I'm just trying to understand what exactly people are uncomfortable with; that's been the one purveying theme since this story broke - "What if he looks at me in the shower?"

It just seems ridiculous to me, that's all.

You're a blooming idiot... most of the guys in the NFL are much smarter than you probably ever will be. I can't tell you how hard it is to play at a high level and then maintain the composure not to punch a douchebag like you in the face when he pretends to know more than you.

I doubt he's gonna be giving guys in the locker room the bedroom eyes as he looks at them changing. If anything, he will likely go out of his way to ensure he doesn't make them feel uncomfortable

A football locker room is the farthest thing from a professional work environment, and everyone is trying to make one another uncomfortable. It's a trust thing - if you can unnerve your teammate with a few verbal jabs here and there, how can you trust him to be strong in the game? You can't depend on players not to break in the game if he can't take a little heat in the locker room.

I know us linebackers were pretty hard on everybody, but especially to one-another. We all knew each others' buttons and how to push them, but that was part of it. Occasionally your button gets pushed, and either you throw down and make your mark or you don't let it get to you. The one thing you don't do is whine about it. That's when you lose everyone in that locker room. This dude sounds to me like an egotistical whiner to me. He lost major draft stock the minute he "came out".

Well yeah I get that. But this is unchartered territory. There are guys like vilma saying they wouldn't feel comfortable in this situation. I doubt this guy would risk ruining this for other closet gay NFL players (present or future) by making guys feel uncomfortable about this.

How many do you know? I know several, and just by the idiocy of your post I can tell you they are smart enough not to say something they have no idea what they are talking about.

I was smart enough to recognize that I wasn't good enough for the NFL and I got 2 years of free education, it was a pretty good deal for me. A few of my close friends that I played with at various stages, high school and college, have played or are currently playing.

Congrats, but saying that most of them have a 11th/12th grade education without knowing anyone in the NFL is foolish. You may be smarter than them, but you are very un-wise for making a comment about something you know very little/nothing about.

doesnt take that much to see that it isnt a bunch of mathematicians and scientists running around on an nfl field.

wtf does that even mean? you were smart enough to realize that you werent nfl material...lol

i figured out at an early age that i wasnt going to be an mlb pitcher. pretty smart huh?

maybe so but its not that far fetched. look at how plenty of them speak in interviews. shite some of the lsu players sound like they couldnt read a dr seuss book if i held a gun to their heads.

Absolutely, and I am afraid what this means for the game as a whole. I think with the stupid crap that came out Miami this year, and what may come up as a result of Michael Sam, we'll see a larger interest in what goes on in NFL/NCAA locker rooms. I can tell you a lot of players view the locker room as their own domain, and there's kind of an unspoken decorum that most players abide by. If he makes trouble because some guy calls him homo, or whatever (it will happen), he'll make a fuss about it. Then what does the NFL do then? You can't berate players? It happens. Just about anything goes in locker rooms, and guys usually fight it out and bond at the end of the day.

Meh, I don't care. If it's not a big deal, and he doesn't want people to make a big deal about it, he shouldn't have gone to the press. The minute he did this he basically just said "hey, I just decided I want to work in sports media for a living and not play football".

The minute he walks into a locker room post-announcement some loudmouth will walk up to him and say, nice to meet you fruitcake, don't look at my junk. We'll see where it goes from there.

So you think that if you are not a scientist or mathematician you have a 11th/12th grade education? I am just pointing out the foolishness of your blanket statement about NFL players. Why are you getting so angry?

You sound bitter. I could at least play a sport and get something out of it. You're showing your astounding ignorance the more you post.

What does LSU have to do with the NFL? Do you have dummies in college football? Absolutely. But I attest that you need a pretty sound level of critical thinking and study skills to succeed in the NFL.

Sounds like you want to stop watching football. On behalf of those who enjoy the sport, please do.

The average NFL linebacker scores a 19 on the wonderlic

A receptionist comes in at 21, a security guard at 17 and a janitor at 14

Running backs -14
Safeties - 19
Corners - 18
WR - 17

Just found it interesting

well yeah... if that doesn't go on in a locker room something is wrong.

at least this guy got way out in front of this thing. He's already made it known that he is gay and the draft isn't even until May.

I can't believe that shite either.

May?

I know its only a few weeks behind when they normally have it but that still pisses me off.
