From listening to Kiper talk sounded like Kyle Turley comp.

Maybe a defender will think twice cheap shotting a Saints QB, the first time Penning says hello.

Just my guess, but he would have been top 3 or so if he'd have come from a bigger program with better coaching.

Agreed… I think you looking at top pick potential had he came out more polished and from a bigger school. He has elite athleticism and size. I can see him developing into a top 5 tackle in the league. Just need to work on his pass pro.

I just got a text from my brother who works at a clothing store.. One of the Saints execs came in and said they are extremely happy with the Penning pick... I figured the Saints would have drafted an OT with the first pick and a WR with the second first round pick.. But it all worked out..

Mobile, agile, and hostile. Improve on technique, and he is going to be really good.

Are you serious? You can like a player but admit that their technique needs work. That is what position coaches are for. Nothing that can’t be coached up

Mpd great thread bud! Def sounds like you have knowledge about his bad tendencies. Hats off to you!

Really, his message did not sound like he was bashing him or anything else along those lines. Some of y’all ppl, I swear, just wanna make ppl as miserable as y’all are!

He’s definitely a bit of a project - it makes you wonder how we are going to deploy him to get the necessary reps he needs.

I’m not going to pretend like I know much about tackle skills. My only concern is that with his size, will he be quick enough to protect? He’ll be facing the quickest big guys on the other team.

They said the same thing about Peat when he came out.
Look at him now.

From what I saw the whole upside argument on him was that he’s huge AND mobile. That’s why people were able to overlook his technique problems

The odds are a FCS player will take a bit longer to develop - maybe he’s Terron Armstead, maybe he plays 2nd half of the season, maybe he needs a RS year. Who knows.

Would guess half a year to start before he starts but who knows. Obviously we probably need him to learn on job and hope he can hold up.

Exactly... he brings a lot of Turley attitude to the table

Speaking as a guy who was at every home game and watched every away game of Kyle Turley's Saints career, I hope for better from Penning. IMO, Turley was average to perhaps slightly above average...at football. World class at self-promotion. I would contend he did not progress much over the course of his career because he was more into being a celebrity hot-head than being a top-notch NFL tackle.

What I do like is he is going to be molded into a consistent pro bowl level OT.
