FYI, FWIW, etc

quote:

18. New Orleans Saints
Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh

When the combine began last week, there were concerns about Pickett's 8½-inch hand size, which is worrisome for a quarterback who has struggled in bad-weather games and with turnovers. But it ended with a great performance from him throwing the football during on-field workouts. I was impressed with the way he put all of the morning's chatter behind him and put on a show. I still have Liberty's Malik Willis ranked higher, but Pickett is the most NFL-ready signal-caller in the class. New Orleans, which had the NFL's lowest passing yards per game (187.4) and tied for the worst completion percentage (58.1%) last season, would be getting a quarterback with good touch, field vision and accuracy.

The door is still open for Jameis Winston to re-sign, which might change the approach, and Taysom Hill is of course under contract. But we know Hill isn't the answer, and Pickett would offer the Saints a potential long-term solution to their signal-caller woes for new coach Dennis Allen.

I would laugh this off, except that nothing we are hearing suggests they are all that excited about Winston and, even if they were, it doesn't realy seem like anyone in the Org thinks of him as anything but a temporary stop-gap... so maybe this is happening?

I'd be very happy with that. Smart, accurate, advanced processor, experienced. Young and big and plays well against the blitz. Can run.

QBs rise in drafts. I do not see him falling to 18. The one I think rises the most is Willis. I can see him going all the way up to the top 10-12 range.

Wonder if the logic is that none of these QBs are really 1st round QBs and with all of the QB movement going on right now, some of those teams originally linked to these QBs are no longer in the market for one.

Maybe, but even in drafts with limited QB talent, teams take a chance. Those teams that have filled their QB holes have created holes for the teams that traded their incumbent.

I took Payton retiring in stride.
Hiring Dennis Allen was a ‘safe’ hire and not very exciting or inspiring. But I’m taking it in stride as well.

But if we let Winston walk and take a QB with our first pick in this draft, I may melt a little on draft day. I trusted Payton and Loomis and haven’t melted over a pick since we took Vaccaro over Jarvis Jones. But I may this draft.

If CSP had seen a franchise QB in this draft he would still be coaching.

Who’s to say we don’t give Winston a one yr deal and still draft a QB….so he’s not forced to play immediately….the only reason I might pass this year…is knowing next year will be a better year for QBs. If they feel it is that strong that even moving up to get one of them would still be better then taking one of the ones available this year….

I truly think the staff needs to look who’s available this year and next and weigh out all options. Truth is we need to get a franchise QB and our only option seems to be through the draft

Thinking the Wilson trade will charge that. Seattle is looking for a QB cause Lock is not the answer. They are ahead of us with the trade.

If we can’t get Jimmy G, I’d be ok with Pickett, I guess

I’m starting to talk myself into trying to get Howell in second round. He’s young. His first two seasons were great. A lot of his skill position guys weren’t there this year.

He rushed for over 800 yards. He has a really good arm. And coming into this past season he was everyone’s top qb and number 1 draft pick. That’s a guy I would take a chance on.
