Todd McShay's latest 3 round mock draft

New Orleans Saints
Round 1 (12): Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville
Round 2 (47): Joshua Garnett, G, Stanford
Round 3 (78): Jaylon Smith, OLB, Notre Dame
Analysis: I love the fit with Rankins and the Saints. He fills a huge need on their defense with his ability to pressure the quarterback from the interior. A high-motor player, Rankins also excels against the run -- good news for a Saints defense that got gashed far too often last season. Smith would've been my No. 1 overall player if not for the devastating knee injury he suffered in his final collegiate game. He's one of the ultimate risk-reward players in this class, with rare ability to impact the game on every snap when healthy.

All for this mock. Would be a great first 3 rounds

Seems high to draft a guard, but maybe he's worth it.

I'm on the fence about smith. I know the guy is a top 10 pick before the injury, but that knee really does make me nervous. I love rankins and the guard. If his knee does check out, he's definitely a huge steal.

I think that's a bit high for Garnett.

With our training staff and Smith's injury... I do not like that pick

take Smith and have 2 potential 3rd round wastes in back to back years?
That's not even including PJ Williams "redshirt" year.
coming off the SJB debacle the year before? 2nd rd
Khari Fortt not even making the team in the same year. 4th round
we cant build a damn team like this. It is so frustrating

Time to start trading these picks for veteran players. With the way we miss on them, we may as well get some guys who we know can play in this league.

or just keep the picks and make sound picks.
do you have any idea how many times the Saints have traded up in the Payton era, giving up an extra pick to select a player?

Awesome draft, 3 pro-bowlers here!!

I love Rankins and I think we all like the Jaylon Smith pick bc we're assuming he can come back from his injury. However, all you have to look back to is last year and Ifo-Ekpre Olomu. If that injury is as bad as everyone says it is, then not sure I want any part of it. With that said though, I at least like that he is a proven player and we aren't wasting the pick on some hybrid LB from West Alabama A&M.

Not the worst I've seen. Not the best.

I don't believe he will make it out of the 2nd round. Someone will take a chance on his future. If we get him at Rd3 then we have a steal.

It's not necessarily a bad mock, but this is far from an "A" Draft for the Saints.
An "A" draft in the first 3 rounds, to me at least, would look something like this:
1) Lawson
2) Reed/Jones/Clark (whichever is available)
3) best OG (Turner, Tretola, Westerman)

How many of those guys were projected top 3 picks overall? None. This type of player is one worth taking a chance on. Personally I'm fine with that chance in Rd 2, but I would be ecstatic if he falls to Rd 3

He has Whitehair going at 48, would honestly prefer him for that 47 selection.
