Probably my favorite game from that season along with my favorite uniforms. Back when Drew's arm was still fire and we didn't hate Jimmy. Mark Ingram got his first NFL td.

I really miss Lance Moore.

This team really should have won the Super Bowl. How that season ended will forever piss me off

I remain convinced that 2011 team was better than the 09 SB team

The 09 team was just super clutch when it mattered.

Until watching that video, I didn't realize just how much his arm had fallen off.

Jabari Greer had a interception in about the middle of the 4th quarter and the crowd erupted

That was the only game I went to thaT year but what a good one it was

Wasn't this the game where they announced Gleason has ALS & brought him out on the field prior to kickoff?

Just a couple of observations after watching those highlights.

1. Brees seam route throws used to be thing of beauty. Unfortunately, the seam routes, deep post, skinny post & deep outs were all off the table in Brees' last few seasons due to his decline in arm strength.

The decline started in 2016 after he bruised his surgically repaired rotator cuff against the Bucs. Most fans completely forgot about that injury & then completely blew it off afterwards but it honestly was the beginning of the slow arm strength decline. Regardless of the injury in 2016, it was only a matter of time. When he had the total reconstruction on his shoulder after the 2005 season, that procedure had an expiration date due to wear & tear alone.

quote:

Drew Brees injured his throwing shoulder while in the pocket on Sunday last week. He was diagnosed with a rotator cuff bruise and surgery was ruled out at this time. He will rehab and return to play when his strength returns. This Sunday, he missed his first game in 10 seasons with the Saints.

So what is the significance of his rotator cuff injury? The main concern at hand is that Brees underwent major reconstructive arthroscopic shoulder surgery in 2006 after sustaining near circumferential tearing of his labrum. The surgery was a success and he has been one of the top quarterbacks ever since. The issue now is that his shoulder joint is unstable. His main stabilizer, the labrum, is allowing the humeral head (the ball in the ball-and-socket joint) to move in and around the joint. In this case the bone can push up against the rotator cuff tendon and can partially tear it from below.

quote:

In Drew Brees case, the question is whether that rotator cuff bruise is actually a partial tear. If it is, then is his reconstruction or recent injury to blame? Drew Brees has enjoyed exceptional success for the ten years following his surgery, but some wear and tear is inevitable in these circumstances.

quote:

The typical treatment for partial rotator cuff tears is rehab, physical therapy focusing on rotator cuff strengthening, scapular (wing bone) stabilization and range of motion. If conservative treatment fails then arthroscopic shoulder surgery is necessary. Brees should be back in the game soon if he has indeed sustained a rotator cuff bruise. If he has a partial tear, then we have to hope that conservative treatments will restore his shoulder for next season.

2. Brees was also so great at manipulating the pocket under pressure, buying time to make completions when he should have gotten sacked. Some fans took note of the declining arm strength but most missed that Brees wasn't as quick & sudden in the pocket as he once was. That really sticks out to me watching those highlights. Which leads me to another point most fans didn't know & that is Brees tore an ACL in high school. With these arthroscopic procedures there's always an expiration date on them with world class athletes to where there will be an eventual decline in performance after so much wear & tear.

quote:

And he knew the injury brought out the best in him.

Brees had torn an ACL in high school. He was a junior at Austin Westlake, on his way to a state championship, and he tore his ACL in December. Brees told the doctors he didn't just plan to be back in time for his senior season, he was going to be back for summer baseball.

3. That 2011 offense was so fun to watch especially during the 8-0 run after the bye week.

Man, the zip Drew had on his ball then was remarkable compared to what he retired with. Even then, he didn't have some crazy arse arm strength or anything, but that tells you how much he fell off.

The throw to Lance Moore up the seam to take the lead and then to Jimmy Graham on 3rd and 10 in the fourth quarter are what I'll always remember Brees as. You've got our guy blanketed 20+ yards downfield, but you can't cover him when Drew wants to take his shot/put it in his spot.

We'll never see another like Drew.

PS: Did we ever have a more fun WR to watch than Lance Moore? The dude having fun, and his celebrations, are something of my childhood I don't think I'll ever forget.

the 2009 defense was so much more clutch.

2009:

2nd in the league in takeaways
3rd in interceptions
5th in fewest TD passes allowed (run defense was weak though).
Will Smith led the team in QB sacks (13)
15th in points allowed
2nd in redzone percentage

2011 defense
30th against the pass
12th against the run
Roman Harper led the team in sacks with 7.5
31st in takeaways
20th in points allowed
28th in redzone percentage

the big difference where the 2011 defense was better was 3rd down and 4th down defense

our defense was in the Top 5 in 3rd down and 4th percentage that year

So I mean its kinda splitting hairs but you have to give the edge to the 2009 defense for coming up with the big plays when needed and for helping to win a fricking super bowl.

2011 is the best Saints team ever assembled IMO.
