Nah. The real reason Payton is leaving is due to the fact that the Saints went all in on the salary cap. It almost paid off but the chickens are coming home to roost. Regardless of who is coaching the next couple of years it's going to be tough sledding in NOLA due to the salary cap. Sean knows this. The next 2-4 years the Saints will be a 4-5 wins per season team. They have to get the salary cap issues cleared up to bring in and maintain the talent level.

The organization was in a much worse salary cap situation last offseason. About $40 million dollars worse going into the 2021 offseason.

No you are an idiot. Benson wasn’t weak, do you think Jerry Jones is weak? they tried to get rid of pos Goodell but Kraft and Co saved his arse. He is leaving because we are ducked, salary cap wise. Hell even Drew Brees counts toward our cap next year. We are going to bleed good players for next few years. We are going to be in complete rebuilding mode

You sure are a whiny fricker. Mad at CSP, mad at the league, mad at the owner. Go watch soccer.

I tend to agree. Looking at how this season shook out, the team wasn't in terrible shape Roster wise. Sure they're coming in worst in the league from a Cap Space perspective, but it isn't something they've not overcome before.

I wonder if they were on opposite sides of the tear down and rebuild debate.

Gotta thing a guy with Payton's competitive nature knows with a few tweaks, he could get them back to the playoffs. Did Payton jump off the Winston train, but ownership veto him? Did he want to stay and compete, but ownership favors the rebuild (or maybe move or sell)?

I just don't think it's as simple as him wanting to step back from coaching. I think he gave Gale an ultimatum to which she didn't cave, so he retires.
