The Cannon on Jim Mora’s Early Training Camps

Was on T-Bob and Hester today telling old stories of how miserable those early Mora camps were (mid/late 80s). Two a days in full pads in that NO heat. Guys were passing out and puking. He said that’s why they started going to Lacrosse. So guys could finish the practices. Never had heard that before.

I wouldn't doubt it. Hell, I can't even ride my mower, edge and weed-eat my yard in this heat without almost feeling like I'm dying. Couldn't imagine running plays in 100 degree + heat with pads.....I'm sure the ones back then didn't breathe at all.

The 1986 season Mora's first, training camp was in Hammond at SLU.

I remember training camp in Vero Beach, Fl during Bum Phillip era and I want to say back from when Hank Stram was coach.

If you condition you body properly you can make it in this heat. I used to wear a slicker suit, hold a shotgun hydroblasting rig, putting off heat, lifting bags, and shoveling on top of roofs if tanks at marathon. The gauge read 114 but we all knew it was hotter. You just have to know what your body can handle. Constant water does nothing. It is and always has been a 3-1 ratio between water to Gatorade along with breaks.

I was in the lacrosse area last year while Saints camp was going on in Metairie, and it was hot as shite there too. 90s+ high humidity. It was miserable. I specifically remember wondering why the Saints would go there.

I mean if you grew up in Louisiana and you played HS football you did 2 a days in this shite too (me in the 2000s). Only we didn't do it on that nice arse NFL grass lol. We had what i could call a dirt ant pile field with some patches of grass growing in it.

Well, back in the 80s the news people always reported temps in the mid 70s during the day and low humidity. So it did make sense to be there from that perspective.

Had a chance to talk to Mora then and there, told him “Good luck with the team. If you can win here, you can be the Governor.”
He said “If we win here, I’ll make more than the Governor does.”

I was there every single day and enjoyed the hell out of it. 10 yo me was in awe at the size of those guys. I have autographsof nearly every player.
