going for it on 4th down on your own 29 in overtime is stupid, not gutsy, as some are saying.

a good example of a gutsy call was the onside kick in the SB against the Colts. still plenty of time to play the game if is fails.

Smith panicked and made one of the dumbest calls of his coaching career.

wtf is an offside kick?

ftr, i texted my falcon friend and told him they should go for it when they sent the punter out. i wasn't thinking it was gutsy, i was thinking our defense hadn't done dick on 3rd or 4th and short all day so why would mike smith think they would now? fortunately they stepped up and proved me wrong.

I liked the decision but hated the play call. Sneak it if it is just a few inches.

I thought it was a dumb call...but I don't think it was panic. It was supreme confidence that the Saints couldn't stop a power play at that distance.

Weren't you the guy that posted doubts, claiming that Sandusky may be innocent and we have no right to judge him until he's found guilty?

I never said I thought he was innocent. I was just trying to bring up the point and discuss the fact that in our modern society the concept of 'innocent until proven guilty' no longer applies.

Anyway...what's your point?

In Smith defense he had our number on fourth down and got it when he wanted it. Just not on the last play.

Go for it but go with a safer higher percentage play

that onside kick in the Super Bowl was pretty stupid too. I would rather have a coach who has the balls to go for it on occasions than someone who is too scared to even try. Payton has earned the right to do so IMO.

There is was no Saints fan watching that game that was happy that they were going for it, until they failed to convert. That tells me it was the right call, just maybe not the right play.

You also have to think it is sudden death rules. Meaning you have to decide if you think you have better odds to convert 4 and inches or stopping the Saints, one of the most dominate offenses in football history, from getting in field goal range after you punt. I would say you almost have to go for it on any 4th and reasonable. It would have been different if you had good enough field position to make the Saints drive the field after the punt, but Atlanta's field position would have likely meant the Saints would only have to move the ball about 30 yards before getting in to field goal territory.

It was definitely the right call but they probably could have easily gotten the few inches with Ryan keeping it. Not sure why you would risk a regular run play with such a tiny bit to gain. If anything do the damn wildcat to make sure you have enough blockers.

I'm sure glad it worked out the way it did though.

I don't understand all this right call shite. that showed no confidence in your defense not confidence in your offense

That was strange, they had success running the ball most of the game but they totally abandoned the run game in overtime until their fourth and inches failure

One of many stupid decisions made by Mike Smith in that game. Definitely not one of his finer days.

He put the game on the line against our saints defensive line with their offensive line and bowling ball 246lb running back to get a few inches. I think whether it was a mistake or not, it was a decision that Mike Smith can live with.
