Just want to add that the first year hit is expected to be about $2m(likely vet minimum + $1.1m pro rated signing bonus portion).
Likely means no moves had to be made to do the deal. Thomas' contract has yet to be updated but even if he saved only 500k would have put us $2.5m under.
That means we have jack shite left except signing a few vet minimum guys(remember the top 51 and vet minimum rules will mean each guy costs only $150k over the bottom guy).
Any other moves will require a restructure or a cut(with Bunkley being the only current candidate).

Falcons life reaction (they wanted to poach him)
eta: one of them is lucid or a Saints fan in disguise:

they are screwed now. they were screwed right before march 11th. yet somehow they signed byrd, was able to say they kept sproles (which means they were over the cap), but after byrd they were less then a million in space, and now today they pull this off.
what are they doing paying people dimes their first year?

They're plenty continuous. Streif has played with them all his career. I'm not sure if they're cheating or not, but I'm genuinely asking for someone to explain. Every year we keep saying the Saints are screwed this year, and they keep coming up with answers. I love how we're like they're gonna pay for it next year. Can we stop pretending that they're stupid for one second? They clearly know what they're doing.

Actually yes, Loomis does tend to throw very low numbers in the first year compared to the per year to get the deal done.
But the point remains he gets the deal done. What has your GM done for you.
Loomis, the deal maker.

Prefer the red hot up and coming Carolina?
$8+mil of cap space
Gone- Jordan Gross, Steve Smith, Munnerlyn, Ginn, Hixson, LaFell, etc
Their biggest signing? You know it...

Nice Paddy. Reminds me of this...

Not sure how I feel about this deal. He's an OKAY RT but not great. His pass protection is pretty good. That said, he's going to be 31. We're stuck with him at least another 3 years due to probably giving him a low cap figure this year and it will take by the 3rd year for all his guarantee money to be gone. Meh. I wouldn't be surprised if he severely declines this year. We do need to protect Brees but did they not have anyone else out there on the market?

shite bro...I wish you would have hit me up before you wrote all that. I would have told you to go ahead and feel good about it.

First off, he was the highest rated RT last year.
Secondly, the contract is essentially a 2 year deal when you consider the guaranteed money.
Third, the tackle market was crazy this year, with very marginal talent getting paid. This contract for a guy that knows your system is a bargain.

Considering the fact he's only been a starter for 3 years when high rated OL go for 10+, he's got at least 3 more good years left in him.

But Loomis has been the gm since 2002. Im still waiting for his contract tactics to come back to bite us...

From Mike Triplett:
quote:
Strief, 30, arguably had his best season to date in 2013 (though he was also excellent when he first took over as the Saints’ starter in 2011). Strief was the Saints’ most consistent lineman throughout the 2013 season, especially in pass protection. He was named the first-team right tackle on ESPN NFL Insider John Clayton’s All-Pro team. And he was the highest-rated right tackle in the NFL by Pro Football Focus.
As I wrote when I broke down New Orleans’ free agents last month, Strief is one of those rare examples of a player who seems to get more credit from national analysts than the Saints’ fan base. Some of that is the nature of the right tackle position, in general. And some of that is because Strief struggled in 2012 -- in part because of a nagging groin injury.
Strief (6-7, 320) isn’t a “mauler” at the line. But he’s about as solid as they come in every area of the game. With his size, he’s naturally a strong run blocker. And he’s also athletic enough to be a very good pass protector and to get out in front of the screen passes the Saints like to run so often. Strief allowed only three sacks last season (though he also committed a costly holding penalty late in the playoff loss at Seattle).
Strief is also a highly-respected leader in the locker room. He was voted as an offensive captain the last two years and as a union representative for the Saints. He’s also been a media “good guy” award winner.

He's not a RB, 31 isn't a huge deal for Oline. I would say he has a few years left in the tank.

Stability is incredibly important for offensive line play. Strief may not be perfect, but he was the best available option. Cutting him loose and hoping to just discover a replacement could have set our line back big time. You can't place a premium on chemistry and trust between the QB and his line. Starting some untested rookie in Strief's place - no thanks.

agree.
you let him walk and your talking about breaking in basically 2 new starters at both tackle positions.
Armstead has what, 4 games of experience? He does show a lot of potential but still, he'll have his growing pains like anyone else.

At times during the 2013 season, I felt like I was the only one on this board who saw what a good season Strief was having.
On a side note, Trip really is the best.

i love that ATL is basically forced into taking an OT with the #6. they do seem really upset now about this signing more so than byrd.
most of them really thought we had no choice but let strief walk and that they would sign him immediately.
frick the falcons.

Obviously the Saints are a talented football team and have been for several years now. I'm not going to say they cheated their way to a Super Bowl win because they still had to be a good enough football team to get there in the first place.
and he ruins it...
quote:
There's no denying the Katrina refs. Anyone who tries to say the Saints never had extra help from the refs during those years are completely one-sided. All teams each year get some calls their way that really shouldn't be, but the amount of calls the Saints were getting their way during those years was beyond ridiculous. Even if it was a random team like the Raiders, I would still say that the amount of calls they had go their way was beyond ridiculous. I'm not saying the Saints bribed the refs because they didn't, and I think it's a poor excuse to say the refs were bribed.
And you're all blinded
quote:
What made me more sick were the Saints fans who were too blind/one-sided to realize the amount of gift-wrapped calls that they were receiving. Opposing teams' receivers would get plowed deep down the field before the ball was tipped and never was there a flag but whenever a Saints receiver would get a quick touch on his forearm, a flag would be thrown. It was a reoccurring thing along with many other bad calls.
