So if teams had back channel talks with Payton shouldn’t that be illegal

Sounds like teams should lose draft picks for that
I still think saints should hope Payton does come back to nfl just to reap the compensation

Why are you (and some others) taking this so personal and/or feel entitled to the point that he cannot coach anywhere else in his career? 15 years in one place as a coach or a player is an eternity. Let the guy do whatever he wants to do. He won't do anything for 3 seasons then he'll probably come back and coach. I personally wish him well and am grateful for the years of service in a franchise that, until he came along, could barely muster a winning season much less a postseason run.

I'd argue that having 24 seasons finishing .500 or better (out of 55 total), and 11 of those seasons in the the last 15 years indicates a team (historically) struggling to win more games than they lose in any given season.
I will give you that if you look at those seasons historically you could say the franchise was trending upwards even prior to Payton coming here. But if you're in the cellar to begin with you can only go up.This post was edited on 1/30/22 at 1:03 pm

Payton should be free to work wherever he wants. He probably didn’t want to stay in NO to do a complete rebuild. The Saints need to be torn down and rebuilt. They have a lot of aging players and nonperformers.

Thats not true..
1. They've already come out and said they wont be rebuilt
2. Outside of Jordan, Davis and Jenkins its a pretty young roster overall.

I don’t agree it’s a complete rebuild as a few pieces here & there makes them a solid playoff team. With that said, “IF” they were a complete rebuild it would be due to him and how he helped build the team. Therefore, that would be a terrible reason why he should have the freedom to go anywhere

The Offense is close to needing a complete rebuild, but not the Defense.
Incidentally, Sean Payton himself is the person most responsible for the Saints Roster on Offense.
I have no idea where Payton will end up coaching. Dallas is as likely as anyplace. What I know for sure is that Payton is not an expert at building an NFL roster on either side of the ball. He's proven over the decades that he knows almost nothing about building a Defense roster. All indications are that he's not an expert at building a roster on Offense, either.
Payton had better be careful about coaching again - he may not have as much energy and brains as he thinks he might have.
Of course, I'm a huge fan of his. I'm just making some observations that may or may not be provable.

I wouldn’t be mad at all if he went somewhere else. The shootings in New Orleans lately in broad day light are horrible and happening very frequently. He should be free to coach where he believes he won’t be shot dead.

Parcels was his mentor. Why would he not do it any other way? Parcels won in NY, retired to TV, and then came back to Pats and Dallas.
