re: So how good is the Vikings Defense?

Vikings fan.
They may play a lot of 2 or 4 deep zone because of the Saints lack of a TE to threaten the seems, but that is not their base, nor is it their preference. They play a base man-zone Nickel hybrid known as the Double A gap system. The rub is that in it Harrison Smith plays like an outside linebacker in running situations and does whatever Mike Zimmer can sceme in passing situations. In passing situations you'll more than likely see 10 vikings on the line of scrimmage and one safety deep with anything from seven coming to dropping 8 in that man-zone hybrid.

But the Panthers D is pretty damn solid too
Carolina’s D might be ranked ahead of Minnehaha if they didn’t play us three times.

Saw it on NFLN. Their pass defense was also ranked last in that time period as well. It's not even in the same league as what we are seeing Sunday. Do you think it's just a coincidence that the Panthers are the only team we've been able to throw all over this year? Their secondary is bad.
Jets 391 yards, McCown 307
Saints 400 yards, Brees 269
Vikings 356, Keenum 280
Packers 384, Rodgers 290
TB 423, Winston 367
ATL 377, Ryan 317
The Panthers do not have a good defense, you see, Timothy?
And any comparison to the Vikings suffocating defense is absolutely laughable. We may win sunday, but it's going to take a perfect game.

They undoubtedly have a good defense. It's really not up for debate. The Vikings have one of the best ever

How's their run D?
Only team we've been able to pass on
Despite playing the hardest offensive schedule in the league, they finished:
7th overall
3rd against the run
11th in PPG
And while they gave up yards down the stretch, they forced a lot of turnovers. 11 in the last 5 games.

12 turnovers forced and multiple defensive TDs

11th =/= 1st
I guess the Saints D is comparable to the vikings. Listen man, it's ok to be wrong. I still think Brees can beat this vikings defense, but it is not in the same league as Carolinas, who downright had a bad defense down the stretch. It's not really a debate. Yes they have a good front 7, never said they didn't. Their secondary is really bad.

Please quote where I've said they were as good as the Vikings
11th = Good, and you're leaving out run D
Then you quote a 5 game stretch where they averaged over 2 turnovers a game

However, since the Week 13 matchup with the Saints, Carolina has won three of four games and has tallied 10 takeaways, tied for third best in the NFL in that span. As of late, the worry isn't with Carolina's defense forcing turnovers but instead with the offense turning them into points. Those 10 takeaways netted just 23 points off turnovers.
Poor Mimsy

One of the obvious keys is getting the run game going. Although Minn was good overall against the run they did get gashed by a few teams on the ground, including Carolina who ran for over 200 yards on them. They have some good run stoppers in the middle of their D-line, but there ends are primarily pass rushers who can be attached with extra TEs.
Smith is a great safety who plays down in the box a good bit to help with run support, if we can run the ball well enough to keep him moving up maybe we can hit 1 or 2 big plays down the field.

yeah but two of those runs (Cam/JStewart) were for very long gains and if you take them away then there isn't much to talk about.

doesn't former Saint Tom Johnson still play for the Vikings?
they haven't given up over 200 yards passing since Thanksgiving when they played the Lions. Since then...
ATL- 173 yards
CAR- 129 yards
CIN- 115 yards
GB - 126 yards
CHI- 171 yards
I realize that isn't exactly against top notch passing QB's though.
The Saints had 284 yards passing in Week 1.
I'm worried cause Peat is out and Carolina shutdown our run game last Sunday.

Agree. If we get stuck behind the sticks against them all day its gonna be rough.
We can't turn the ball over and I think the Defense will need to get at least 2 takeaways to give us a chance. Case Keenum doesn't scare me but he does have two good WR's and a good TE to throw it to.

Man I wanted us to draft him so damn bad in 2012. Can you imagine he, Lattimore, AND Marcus Williams in the secondary?

I barely remember the game, so looking at the box score, the Saints really squandered their chances early.
First Half:
Two 13 play drives: the first one pretty much ended by a Peat holding penalty in the red zone, the second one ended with a FG from the 2 yard line.
The first half could have ended 10-6 Vikings, with Minn seemingly willing to run out the clock, but Payton insisted on relying on the defense. 95 yards later it is 16-6.
2nd half:
Again, two really good drives ending with kicking FGs from the 6 and 2 yard lines.
All things considered: 8 drives, and 5 came away with points including 3 FGs that were shorter than 25 yards.
Defensively, I can only assume/hope the Saints will perform better than that game.

Who they po later against masters here. They played two playoff teams in that span and lost to one giving up 31 points and nearly lost to the Falcons who are a Jekyll and Hyde team with an offense that has been anemic most of the season.
They also didn’t face many good OLs in that time.
Minnys defense is great but they are beatable and are facing the best offense they’ll have likely seen all season.
