Should we have tried to draft Cade York?

4th is high for a kicker and Lutz sees to be his old self again but he’s also one of the highest paid kickers in the league and we need to save cap space anywhere we can. York will be an all pro kicker for 15 years but we could have had him on a rookie deal the next 4 years while still getting draft capital in return for Lutz. There’s so few elite kickers out there that even coming off injury I have no doubt some team would have taken that risk and his salary and offered a mid-late round pick for him. Seeing York hit that 70 yarder in warmups then other night then turn and hit from 60 going the opposite way with room to spare just got me thinking what if.

You wanted the Saints to use a 2nd round pick on a kicker? You also have no idea what we could've gotten for Lutz. I don't think teams are giving up a ton of draft capital for a kicker coming off of a season ending injury.

We were not in the market for a kicker.

Sure, trade a known commodity that still has several years ahead of him and hope your draft pick kicker pans out. I’m sure that’s the plan all of the successful teams use

Didn't "some team" recently draft an absolute can't miss kicker in the 2nd because he was going to be the best kicker since Janikowski? How'd that work out again?

People are going to give you shite but Cade York is a really good kicker. We just weren't in the market. The 4th round is more of a hit or miss round, so if we were in need of a kicker I would've been okay with that.

If we didn’t have Will Lutz you’d be right.

But we do, so you’re not.

But it would've given us some more cap space to get much needed help elsewhere. The other fella was right about paying for a rookie contract the next 4 years instead of millions for Lutz. He signed a 5 year deal in 2019 for $20,250,000. We could've opted out this year but with some dead cap hit. No one even considered a kicker in the draft because we had Lutz.

This love affair with LSU players is getting absurd.
