well considering he didn't ask about Peat, not sure why you commented that....oh NM i know why you did.

as for Rankins - I watched the game and thought he played very well. if he maintains that level, he is gonna have a fine season for us and is gonna be a major disruption for opposing Offenses.

Thanks. I heard Fairly looked good also. I feel as though our defensive line will be much improved from last years, which will help our passing defense. I'm looking forward to a great season.

I keyed in on Rankins a few times throughout the game in both run and pass situations. I saw the exact same player that I saw on tape. Gets pushed around in run situations at times, lacks consistent pass rush moves, but has good quickness when not engaged.

It's early, but I hope becomes the penetrating type player that he can be.

Fairley did look good, had some decent pressures and almost got a sack, but was a definite disruption - even had a couple run stops, or at the very least blew it up in the back field.

as for Rankins - he didn't play too much, but i thought he did fine for his 1st actual NFL game - has a lot of potential and a high ceiling - should only get better

Where are you guys getting that he played well? When I saw him in the game it was either him hitting a double team looking lost, getting washed out of the play or always the player who popped up on camera after someone else made a tackle/sack. He looked like a rookie to me.

It was his first ever taste at playing in the NFL.

You ever seen a rookie dlineman play against a solid oline before and just assrape them?

he hit Garopolo twice, and on another place sniffed out a WR screen for no gain.

some of the PFF guys rewatched the film & said he had solid debut

Nah man Rankins played beyond the first half. He had plenty of snaps.

The fact that he's getting double teamed is already an improvement over last season, when teams could just double team our ends (really just Cam). If he's pulling double teams, he's already providing the team with a boost. I'll take our ends in one-on-one matchups all game long.

He doesn't look lost on this play. I guess you didn't study the tape as well as you claim. I'm glad we have you and the other resident scout here to tell us how terrible these players are; your input is much appreciated

100% unequivocally this. Not many players can overcome double teams in any sport, those that can are usually all-time greats at their respective positions. For a rookie to demand a double team his first preseason debut is very promising.

Any player that forces a double team is a mathematical win for a defense. It limits the downfield ability of their receivers and allows you to, in turn, double team their weapons or spy a running QB.

What a jackass... How can you possibly find humor that your 'favorite' team is supposedly on 'the decline'??? Serious question

It's one play. And that may be the only play where he actually got penetration. His speed and strength are undeniable. His technique is lacking though. You can see that that is a very poor block to begin with, of course Rankins will beat that. Any DT on the Saints roster would've blown past that guard.

No one ever said he was terrible. I just never understood his hype and still don't see how he'll become the elite player that everyone claimed he will be. I'd love to like Rankins but I just can't from a football aspect.

Man some of you on here love to exaggerate. The expectations for him are elite now? I swear we just wanted a guy who can get some kind of push consistently.

I really wish fans could learn to just enjoy football.
You start staking your enjoyment on all these millions of conditions you make up, then you'll never enjoy it.

For me, it's:
If my team loses, oh well, football happened.
If my team wins, awesome, we won!

It gets to the point where if even one player from a draft of nine people doesn't become awesome, you can't enjoy a game.
It doesn't matter if 51 other players are doing their jobs, we risk all our enjoyment on one player.
Oh, but if that player turns it around, there's always another player to be so disappointed in, that all you can do is bitch.
