New Orleans Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had a rough outing against the Los Angeles Chargers, completing just 5 of his 12 passing attempts. He was off-target on many of his throws and often held onto the ball longer than he should have; at other times, Bridgewater put too much heat into it, leading to dropped or deflected passes. By all accounts, it was a day to forget.

But Saints head coach Sean Payton chalked up the poor performance to an undisclosed illness, which should have made Bridgewater’s exit come sooner — if not held him out altogether.

If the Saints weren’t shorthanded and hadn’t already ruled out playing the starter, Drew Brees, Bridgewater may have not suited up to begin with. However, Bridgewater isn’t letting himself off of the hook so easily. Even if he wasn’t feeling his best, he doesn’t see that as any excuse to underperform.

“I owe it to those guys to be out there,” Bridgewater said after the preseason game. “I think I just have to do a better job just fighting through situations and things like that.”

“I missed a couple throws, the energy wasn’t there,” he continued, disappointed in how he’d played while surrounded by the first-team offense. But it’s clear that Bridgewater wants to show this isn’t who he is, and that he’s certainly a better passer. Brees should return to the lineup, even if only briefly, next week against the New York Jets — but Bridgewater’s time isn’t yet up. He’ll have another chance to impress before the regular season starts.

I was never 100% convinced that he was “the future” either, but there’s a lot of over reaction going on around here.

Whatever he had was contagious because it made me sick just watching it. Piss poor performance. I'd rather have seen Taysom play the whole game if true.

I hope he was sick. I hope that was the reason he looked so bad.

Everyone here suddenly knows more about football than Sean Payton.

I dont know more then him, but I do know that once Brees is gone, we will go back to wishing we could get to 8-8. I dont care if its Taysom or Bridgewater. It wont make a bit of difference because if either one are the future of the franchise, we are doomed. Then we will be able to see if Payton's success was because of Brees.

This is a passing league, and if you dont have an above average passer, well you already know.

I don’t understand why you don’t just have Hill play the whole game in that case.

Or better yet have Brees play a couple of series. Not having him come out at all drives me crazy.

Why? The previous 18 seasons wasn’t enough for you to know he doesn’t need to play in preseason?

Who knows, but I can see where decisions like this is more about locker room politics than performance.

Well I suppose you could be right.

I suppose we could go 7-9 for several years with a future hall of famer too.

I am a Teddy fan. I believe he is a good QB. However, he has had a few chances to show what he is capable of and he has left a lot to be desired.

Taysom has been up and down when given the opportunity to play as well, but so far this offseason, he has looked much better than Teddy.

It really doesn't matter who is QB for the Saints. Fans will always complain. When Brees retires people will quickly forget how, according to many fans, he has been regressing every year for the last 10+ years. How we needed to find his heir apparent for the last 10+ seasons. How every pick he threw was because he is washed up and over paid. How every season with Brees as our QB that we missed the playoffs was because he was greedy, overpaid, and selfish.

Whoever takes over for Brees has no chance to win over the fan base because Saints fans will canonize Brees the day after he retires.

I can agree with this.

Given full health, Sean Payton's coaching / offense, and an all around solid team like the Saints have now, I think Teddy could have success and win some games.

1 half of a preseason game doesn't convince me otherwise. The plays are limited, and its not your typical personnel.

Even week 17 last year was more akin to a preseason game. You'd like to see him elevate others in those scenarios, but if the coaches trust him and believe in him, Id like to see a good sample size of regular season games before we call him a bum.

People need to chill about Bridgewater & Taysom Hill.

Bridgewater is on a 1 year deal & he WILL NOT be cut, b/c it's a 7.25 mil dead money hit if he is cut. He has 2 more preaseason games & an entire year of practice to convince CSP that he's the man for the job next year. If Bridgewater was sick...then I'll give him a pass for yesterday.

Taysom Hill is a good #3 QB, damn good running QB, & damn good special teams player. This is also the last year on his contract. He's also auditioning for a new contract next year.

Hopefully Brees stays healthy & we don't have to worry about who comes in for Brees. I'd actually like Bridgewater to stay as the #2 for now, b/c you're not supposed to have your #2 playing special teams & running full speed into LB's. You're basically taking away Taysom Hill's value by making him the #2.

I don't think that 1 game means that Bridgewater sucks or that Taysom Hill is great. It was just 1 game. CSP isn't an all knowing football mind, but there probably aren't 5 people on the planet that know QB's better than he does...maybe zero. I trust CSP will make the right decision.

I dont think it's about cutting anyone. It's about looking to the future and re-evaluating where we will be. We all WANT Teddy to be the future based on his pedigree, but unfortunately he hasn't shown that pedigree lately. Just facts.

At this point, I'm not sure we re-sign him next year and instead save that money to keep the '17 draft class together. Surround Taysom with all those guys and maybe the drop off won't be so huge.

Either way I'd like to see Taysom start game 4.

This wasn't directed to the majority of the people on here. I'm responding to the people on here saying that Bridgewater needs to be cut. There were some last night & some early this morning.

I'm not sold on Bridgewater being our future starter, but the good thing is that CSP still has a few more months to decide that.

I know most people think this is Brees' last year, but that's no guarantee. All this talk is a complete waste of time if Brees plays another year or 2.
