Sean Payton spoke for 92 minutes in his retirement press conference, thanking everyone who could think of him as his time as the Saints head coach came to an end.
But he had one more thank-you to deliver on Sunday, by way of a full-page ad in the Sunday edition of the Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate.
THANK YOU. New Orleans has been a great ride," read the message. "See you on the neutral ground."
Payton announced his retirement from the Saints on Tuesday after 16 seasons with the team, a decision that had been rumored about for weeks but one that came as a bit of a shock nonetheless. It comes just one season removed from Drew Brees' retirement, with the legendary quarterback also purchasing a full-page advertisement to send a message to his beloved city.
Despite a late start, the Saints are now fully into a coaching search, but face competition from a handful of other teams who have been into the search for their next leader for weeks, and with multiple teams already making hires after firing their coaches after the 2021 season. The Saints have already been linked to former Dolphins coach Brian Flores, Bucs OC Byron Leftwich, Lions DC (and former Saints assistant Aaron Glenn), as well as in-house candidates such as Dennis Allen and Kris Richard.
Saints GM Mickey Loomis is yet to speak to Payton's retirement, but indicated that would come when he speaks at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama this week.

How nice of him to leave a very heartfelt 2 sentence memoir to the city. Almost as courageous as him quitting on the team and city so he can pursue coaching elsewhere.

In a year or two Payton will be among the most hated people in the city.
Nick Saban 2.0.
I guarantee this.

By a small amount of people they'll call him Saban 2.0.
Most realize he's been honest about retiring and that it could be just a short time. Even on the Dan Patrick show he was honest.
Which is fine. There's not many Bill belichicks in the world.

This will depend on what the Saints do to replace him. If the Saints Fo makes the right moves, we could be laughing our asses off at a team hiring a washed up SP.

Payton will sit a year so whatever team he joins in 2023 (cough.. Dallas.. couch) will owe the Saints less compensation.

It's Good PR for the day he uses it to wipe his arse and coach another team.

I’m sorry I just can’t hate Sean. I wish he stayed but he got us a super bowl and that buys him grace in my book. As long as he doesn’t coach the Falcons I don’t care

I swear you guys shite on everything. We’re the fricking Saints. We had a .400 all time winning percentage before he got here.

Payton and Brees can both suck a massive cock.

Just frick off and leave.
Is his press conference over yet?

Unless he goes to coach for the Falcons or Alabama, this aint happening. City loves Sean, mouth breathers on here that dont live in Nola arent a representation. He did great things for the Saints and New Orleans. 15 years is a long time at one job for anyone. I understand if he wants a change of scenery.
