One other thought on it- Most think Nicks has surpassed Evans in performance.

It isn't opinion anymore...2 years in a row prove this.

They could trade Evans straight out and then have plenty of money for a Nicks deal.

How much money would we actually save in such a trade? I would imagine that we would take a pretty big hit.

Well, if we franchise him, do yall think he will be upset and start taking more plays off? Some players don't respond well to teams doing this to them. I'm not saying I'm against franchising him, it's just a legit question.

he'll be up for a new contract next year, so it wouldnt be in his best interest

Pay your QB first and foremost. That's #1. If they can sign either Colston or Nicks, the other gets franchized

This.
Brees gets signed. Colston and Nicks will be a sign and a tag and as always the who gets tagged will bitch some and be the last to show at camp. S.O.S.

Not so much about money as if the case being you can only keep one, then keep the one you like most- if the money is in the same range.

MDS, got a handle on the capology here?

We can't afford him. We got more important signings. Not to mention Sean Payton has always been able to find good o-line talent in the draft.

The Saints aren't tying up all that money in 2 guards. They just aren't. Maybe the Saints of old, but this regime is too smart. There are too many glaring needs elsewhere. You let Nicks walk and replace him in the draft or FA.

Detellier addressed this actually. He's said he talked to Nicks about this and Nicks basically said what will be done will be done, he'll show up and play football if it happened.

Good to know Nicks said that. That takes away some of my concern about franchising him.

Letting him go for nada? He's a free agent, you aren't getting anything for him.

If he's franchised, no team is giving up 2 first round picks for him when they can just sign him in 2013.

Compensation could be negotiated at a lower price. Saints could be inclined for maybe a 1st i would think especially with no picks this year... maybe not but certainly worth keeping in mind.

Too bad if he's gone we won't be getting anything for him.

He's going to command a ton of money. IDK if the FO can swing that type of money.

move over; I got this...

If cut or traded this offseason, Evans would count 8.5 mil against out cap

This is based on the prorated signing bonus only. There are usually other factors that play into cap hit, so it could be more. Since he is scheduled to count 4.7 mil against us if he is on the team this year, then we are talking losing another 4 mill if he's moved.

Next year his cap hit is 8 mill, so that would be the better time to trade him. Under this scenerio, it is quite possible to sign Nicks long therm, take the cap hit this year and trade Evans next season when it would actually save us about 1.5 mill

I could be completely wrong about all of this as well

How do yall feel about this?

quote:

LHolderCBS Larry Holder The reaction from players about Drew Brees staying and Carl Nicks staying were quite different. Positive for Brees, not as much for Nicks.

interesting...

that maybe there's some truth to him not giving all and taking plays off. if this statement by Holder is true, then it does not sound like the team would be behind Nicks getting caysh money.

His next tweet said
quote:

Nicks is well liked. Only so much $ to go around

Sounds like the team feels like they can easily replace Nicks. Like him as a person but he's not crucial.

Will Smith is set to make 7 million in 12, 9 million in 13, and 10.4 million in 14. Something needs to be done about this. I rather we use some of this money for Nicks or Colston. Will Smith's production does not constitute the salary.
