Salary Cap Issues 2021

The Saints went “all in” for this year & face a huge cap issue. I really don’t think anyone is better than Loomis when it cones to contracts & the cap, but he faces a daunting task. The roster will change dramatically with a number of tough decisions needed. All of the following is rounded numbers of possible cap savings:
* Drew - wait till June 1 for any move - retire/restructure- save $24M
* Kwon - cut - $ 13M - as good as he is, cannot stay healthy
* Cam - restructure- $ 11M
* Easton - cut - $ 6M
* Janoris - cut - $ 7M
* Lattimore - restructure-$ 7M
* Ramcayk - restructure- $ 6
* Brown - cut - $ 6M
* Murray - cut - $ 3M - a great backup, but the AK contract dictates a draft choice replacement
* Morestead - cut - $ 4M - thanks for the memories- hate to see him go
The total cap is expected to decrease after the covid season causing reduced revenue. We need some draft magic this year to find the hidden gems.

The punter decision was made when they kept that guy and ir him
Lattimore and ramczyk in line for big paydays as well as Hendrickson
You could franchise one
Get Winston on a prove it deal
Cut armstead too injury prone
Jordan aint taking a pay cut

That’s still $30M short of getting us to the cap number and then we gotta find a way to fill out the roster. Gonna be tough!

Saints can also trade Armstead and Taysom Hill. It would save another 16 mil after dead cap hits.
I’m sure Armstead has some value. Jacksonville Or Cincinnati should value Armstead for a 4th rounder. Both teams need to protect their young franchise Qb’s.
Taysom should fetch a 3rd or 4th rounder from a team like the Bears, Ravens, Eagles (If the trade Wentz), or Cardinals needing a physical running Qb to back up their running QB

We could restructure Malcolm, Taysom, Terron, MT, and AK.

You guys are insane if you think Payton is trading his pet project in Taysom.
Saints should just look to restructure anyone they don't plan on losing anytime soon. It just kicking it down the line more but it keeps them on the roster and help avert disaster now.
The question is does the Saints want to bite the bullet now with a big roster turnover or get a good QB and try to keep the core team together? That will be the question. If you roll with Winston and Taysom you get out of cap trouble in 1-2 years.

What do you disagree with?

Personally, all the restructuring. That’s what killed us back in the 13,14,15 seasons. I feel 21 will be a tough year cap wise and we may have to let a good player or 2 go while not being able to sign any big FAs. I think after 21 season we will be back in decent shape. Restructuring too many people will just keep us in bad shape

Eli restructured his contract almost every year so it could free up enough space to get better players.
Management continually made poor decisions so all it did was make Eli one of the highest paid quarterbacks his last few years.

4th rounder? He’s one of the best tackles in the game. Tunsil went for two firsts....

Tunsil was younger without the injuries
We have a couple tough decisions and guys like armstead and Jordan. But that's the reason why we have invested so much in the draft on both lines, to eventually replace those guys.

We have almost $13 million left in the 2020 cap. Doesn’t that carry over to the next year? If so, that helps a little.

Yes but Armstead is an elite left tackle. If you get rid of him that leaves a gaping hole with nobody to replace him.
If we are just accepting tanking the next two years to reload then that’s fine.
This is going to be the most interesting offseason since the saints signed Brees.

well bad contracts to Peat, Hill, and Jenkins probably cost us Armstead

what? no
we've HEAVILY invested in OL in the draft. Peat got that big deal to slide to LT likely
we invested heavily for Davenport to take over for Jordan
if we keep shitty Hill at QB with our D and Kamara/Thomas, we can still be 8-8 or so, maybe 7-9. that's not "tanking"
if we can somehow get Winston to stay for cheap next year, we are contenders even without Armstead and Cam

Janoris is not getting cut over 7 mil
Posted on 1/19/21 at 9:30 am to SlowFlowPro
Armstead has a $16 mil cap hit next year (9% of the total cap space), heading into age 30 and final year of the deal
Jordan is taking up another 10% of the cap at nearly $19 mil

Janoris jenkins?
How was his contract bad?
He played like a number 1 corner
