The secondary, with lesser talent at safety and now at slot corner, is going to get torched.
Williams was better than Maye, but Mathieu is head and shoulders better than Jenkins in coverage.

it's clear he's a declining player.

He’s not that much better. How about the slot corner now? Whose filling that position? This secondary is going to get hammered.

The most you were ever going to get was a 3rd.
A 3 and a 4 would have been fair enough.

Maye's last 2 full seasons for the Jets were every bit as good statistically as Williams in those same seasons. In fact, he had way more tackles than MW.
Not saying he's better, but I'm definitely liking the productivity per dollars spent for Maye versus Williams.
Our secondary most certainly did not get worse.

Mathieu has been one of the better coverage safeties for a long time. Jenkins was always mediocre, at best.

Mathieu. He still ranks near the top of safeties against the slot.

Ok.

What about last year?
What about it?

When defending the slot, Mathieu allowed the second-lowest quarterback rating (53.3) among all safeties with at least 99 pass coverage snaps in 2021, per Pro Football Focus.
He allowed a league-low 45 pass yards and tied for a league-high three interceptions while also leading the NFL in yards per snap (0.35). Mathieu also finished second in both snaps per target (9.6) and snaps per reception (14.3).
All of those numbers come while playing the 14th-most coverage snaps among all safeties in 2021
All of this on a Steve Spags defense. shite secondary around him, and a defense that produced the 4th lowest sack total in ‘21.
You cannot quantify his versatility. And now he’s surrounded by great players and scheme.

TM is way better than Jenkins. Don't be ridiculous.
Slot can be manned by a number of very good players already on the roster including Roby.
Perhaps reaching for Taylor was an insurance policy against CJGJ giving the organization bad vibes.

Trade value plummets when the player is due for a massive contract.
This. Would love to keep the player but not the attitude. If their is a position that hurts us the least to lose a player this is one of them.

2015 was his last year above 80

Hell make him inactive
Im curious because I don't know, if you make him inactive would he have gone home and sat or would he have still been around the team. Also if he was inactive would he have counted on the 53 man at all. I don't understand how the inactive works.
But if he would have not been around the team then it would have made more sense to do that and hope an injury on another team would have given you a better deal because this deal sucks.

if they wanted him gone that bad then just sit him on the bench all year and let him walk to sign a big deal and we get a 3rd in comp
I somewhat agree but the distraction that he is and would become along the way it is prob best to let him go now and not have to deal with that. Sounds like he was already becoming an issue. I trust the decision that the locker room was more important than a better draft pick.
I'm sure that DA greenlighted this move. We added some good vet leadership with Landry and the Badger and CGJ has shown that, even though at times it's entertaining, he acts like a juvenile. And I'm sure that MT13 and him aren't the best of buds.

Williams was better than Maye
At centerfield yes, but Williiams never covers anyone in man like Maye has in the past and Williams was afraid of contact against the run.
Williams got $37M guaranteed, Maye & Mathieu combine for $32.5M.
Bradly Roby got $10M/yr & $19M guaranteed, plus Alontae Taylor on a rookie contract. Look at that compared to what CGJ will get. Add to that there might have been some hard feelings from him being in previous trade talks and Saints not wanting to offer him top dollar in negotiations then it makes sense to trade him
Posted on 8/30/22 at 12:22 pm to tigersquad89
They really traded him for a pack of skittles...Would rather have him this year and let him walk in FA than get a 5th rounder
Posted on 8/30/22 at 12:22 pm to NamariTiger
I cant say I'm shocked considering they werent willing to give market value for MW. Im having a lot of trouble with the trade itself. I feel like we lost out big there.

There is no way CGJ had this little value around the draft. None. We tanked his value by mishandling our cap and what we could offer him in a contract. Then we got barely over "cut him" value and -EV when considering comp picks.
There is too much focus on trying to compare our replacement players for guys we lost due to cap mismanagement when the cap mismanagement is the primary issue. The reason to compare new players is because those contracts were in direct response to cap mismanagement and will have to be fixed in a year or 2, creating a bigger mess.
In 2 years when Marcus Williams is dominating the centerfield as the best FS in football (while being only 28), we'll be cutting Maye and then eating $5-7M in cap space the following year, causing us to go into the bargain bin again and defer money, perpetuating the cycle.
