I think it's mostly comparing him to some of our recent backs like Bush, Sproles, Pierre Thomas (lethal screens). Those were very good pass catchers so Ingram doesn't get the credit I feel he deserves in that area.

Well I certainly don’t think he’s an absolute lock to make the team or for playing time, but it seems to be a combination of statistics and need at the position.

This little study from 2014 shows that 70% of 6th round picks make the team in their first year. The study is 4 years old but it was data compiled from a 10 year sample. I’d assume it’s pretty consistent in the 4 years since that article.

So those statistics combined with the teams circumstances (Mark Ingram’s suspension and just a need for versatile running back depth), I’d say he’s a 90% to make the team. I think he would have to show absolute ineptitude for the staff to cut a draft pick right out of the gate. He seems to have been drafted by the right team at the right time.
