It is usually the kinda deal/move for a more contending team. But two things could be at play.
One is DA. He knows its his last shot at being a HC this year. He knows he needs a pass rush now "maybe later" does him no good so this is the one thing he insisted on.
Or two the Saints saw the upside in Young and in talks got a feel that they had a shot at signing him to a longer term deal.
I think its one of these two. Hope it works out
Edit
It didn't

It’s $13m for a full year of Chase Young the player

Yes but if he doesn’t do enough to help us win meaningful games and all you net is a compensatory pick. -$13 million doesn’t help our cap situations.

possibly as high as a third round pick

Possible but unlikely

frick it let’s give him 20. How about 30?

You’re looking at this oddly

I’m trying to be objective. If Chase was a home run, no brainer hire he’d be on a different team with a much larger contract. There’s always pros/cons so let’s chill on the sunshine pumping. I hope he does well and falls in love with poboys and crawfish. Hes gonna look great in black n gold

I like the signing. Nice prove it deal. Also, we can focus on getting one of those great o linemen in the first round.

They overpaid given the current status of the Saints. A one year deal at that number is usually done for a team that needs one missing piece for a deep playoff run.

wut?

His market value is agreed upon by many sites specific to projecting those sorts of things at $13 mil/yr.

The only 3 teams to show interest were the Panthers, Titans and Saints.

He chose the obvious best situation for himself to prove his worth and earn a milti-year deal. The Saints most certainly did not over pay, and their situation can most certainly absorbe a fully guaranteed $13m for the 2024 year much less adding a void 2nd year to spread the cost over the two years. (If it turn out that's what they do)

New Saints DE Chase Young, who signed his one-year, $13 million deal with New Orleans today, is undergoing a neck procedure that is expected to sideline him into training camp, per sources. The expectation is that he will return in time for the season. Teams were aware of his neck issue, and the Saints were comfortable moving ahead with it.

Nothing says Saints like overpaying for an injury prone DE with physical tools but little production.

Amazing that we gave him a fully guaranteed deal knowing he needs a neck procedure that will keep him out of training camp. Makes no sense. Would think we would have at least gotten a 2nd year as insurance in case he misses any time this year.

He chose the only mom and pop front office that would give him a decent deal with a fricked up neck.

The Saints have injury protections in Chase Young’s contract that offer some cover if he misses time, I’m told. He’s expected to be ready for the season, so the hope is those never come into play.

The guy has issues

Didn’t show up for practice because he wanted to shoot some commercials and promo’s.
Injuries to knee and now neck which will cause him to miss spring practice.
