Rap tweet:
Am I missing something here? I know it was theorized that he would be signed so he would go to another teams mini camp, but 3 years?

It’s a 3-year deal for Barrett and the #Saints. Perhaps a future investment

There are 3 year deals and there are "3 year deals".
My guess is its the latter, ie very little (if anything) in the way of guarantees.
The appearance of commitment without much in the way of any actual commitment. If you strike gold you have a player locked in, and you get him to camp by giving him the "3 year deal".

We've signed players with little chance of making the roster to 3 year deals before. I don't know the reasoning for doing it, but it means nothing as far as chances of making the team.

yes, the fact that they mean and guarantee nothing. its really only in the Saints interest if in fact they do end up panning out.

3 year deal is the same deal EVERY UDFA gets.
With the way it works, even if they signed him to a one year deal they'd still own his rights as he'd be an exclusives rights FA until he accrues 3 seasons, at which point he becomes a RFA.
The only odd thing here is the way Rap reported it. All these deals are exactly the same, all for vet minimum over 3 years. Only difference may be signing bonus and how much is guaranteed (usually very little).

Tryout guys don’t get a contract or paid anything
Barrett is now a UDFA with a contract

He was probably signed that way due to competitive teams interested in luring him away.

Maybe we are hoping he becomes our Pryor

No doubt
And he chose us bc our backups are bad, drew has a few years left, and SP. he has a real shot here
Plus our OSU guys

He wants to be in the pics next year.
Actually, I'm semi-serrious

which is a good thing to be sure - hell it shows the guy wants to learn and put forth the effort to do so.

He will be the practice squad QB is my guess
Taysom Hill will get every chance to win the backup role in preseason
Savage will also get a shot as well to prove he can be the clip board holder
The good thing with Hill is you keep him around for special teams again

ALL UDFAs get 3 year deals.
If we signed him to a 1 year deal and it expired he would still be an exclusive rights FA, meaning no other team could talk to or sign him if we gave him a minimum tender offer.
This is why ALL UDFAs get 3 year deals, because it would wind up working out as such anyway.
This is just Rap trying to make something sound more than it is like always.

Huh. Did not know this. Makes sense though.

If you ever notice a guy get waived and brought back on a one year deal, if he isn't waived again and he hits FA he becomes an EFRA.
This happens until he accrues 3 seasons, which at that point the next time he hits FA he becomes a RFA.
This is why the standard is 3 years. They'd be the team's "property" anyway (unless waived and claimed by someone else), yet if they did 4 years they'd miss being a RFA, losing money.
This is why players drafted in the later rounds (5-7) would rather be UDFAs instead of getting drafted because draft contracts are 4 years and they are making minimum for one more year while UDFAs get to cash in a bit as RFAs that 4th year.

All rookie deals drafted or Undrafted are 3 years minimum.

Drafted players have 4 year deals (of course 1st rounders have 5th year options).
The new cba is pretty strict and structured as far as rookies go. Every drafted player HAS to have a 4 year deal, no more, no less.

I think there is definitely something to that. Part of it is JT wanting to come play with his boys and some of it is Sean Payton's relationship with Urban Meyer and the success he has had drafting OSU players who show up ready to compete. I don't really think Barrett is an NFL QB but he does have leadership skills and was a pretty good runner. Perhaps a slot receiver and a backup QB. might help with the salary cap.
