The Saints continue to chop away at their salary cap overage with just over three weeks to the new league season. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Tyrann Mathieu's contract is the latest restructure for New Orleans. The move clears $4.668 million in space for the team.
Mathieu originally signed a three-year, $28.3 million deal with the team last year in free agency. He was certainly a strong presence for the defense and had a strong back half of the year. New Orleans has now cleared just over $31.4 million in space through five players.
Making Way for the Cap
Marcus Maye - $4.9M
Erik McCoy - $10M
Ryan Ramczyk - $10.336M
Wil Lutz - $1.5M (contract lowered from $3.4M base)
Tyrann Mathieu - $4.668M
The Saints could still look at the deals for Cam Jordan and Marshon Lattimore and restructure them to provide more cap space. Taysom Hill and Demario Davis could be other candidates. They're not too far off from getting where they need to be for compliance, but will undoubtedly need to create some room for free agency and their draft class.

Cool, the Saints have been very favorable to LSU alumni since Peyton left.

Mathieu is the kind of contract I think we need to take the hit on now.
This is a bad decision long term.

i dont think he lived up to be the player they thought he was
in my mind he was a complete disappointment and not worth his contract as well as not being an upgrade at that position
hopefully this new deal is something that just makes it affordable for us to cut him now

Of course it’s a horrible decision, but they have little choice. We’ll kick the can next year with another set of overpaid veterans and continue the death spiral. The Saints are just hoping HB can be semi serviceable next season.
It should be apparent to most we are in the early innings of a lost decade of Saints football.
Season ticket sales will continue to dwindle, those that go will risk their vehicle, and the only choice in a few years will be to sell and move the team.

Quite the opposite...2024
Base Salary: 7mil
Prorated Bonus: 3.067mil
Non-Prorated Bonus: 2mil
Cap Hit: 12.067mil
Dead Money: 10.368mil
Savings: 1.699mil
Sad part:
2025: not even on the roster
cap hit: 5mil
Same with Marcus Maye (near identical contracts)

na. he's still really good at nb. we just need to get a true single high safety or at least another deep safety.

Don’t worry we’ll kick some more cans to create more dead money in 26 and 27. Lost decade folks, lost decade.

Love the guy but he is done.
3 years 30 mil to a guy that was done. Terrible.

Yeah, we should eat crow and offer CJGJ a contract to come back. Mathieu is a liability at this point and isn’t going to get any better.

Is there a stipulation in there that says he will have to actually tackle people?

I’m sure the 5M cap hit in 2025 won’t bite us in the arse or anything. Loomising!

That is why I think all these feelgood stories are a bunch of BS.
They always write these articles like the player is being a team player and giving something up to help the team...They are not. The FO is just moving money around. In most cases the player leaves the office with a check that day that they call a roster bonus or signing bonus and then tack the bill on to the end of the deal. As this one says $5 million has been put on the end of the deal.

The Honey Badger.
He may be past his prime, but I have not seen his replacement yet.
