NEW ORLEANS -- The NFL postseason produces examples of game-defining drives, which have become legendary.

There is "The Drive" or "The Ice Bowl" or Joe Montana to John Taylor, as examples, and the New Orleans Saints can now add a series that should garner attention for years.

Down 14-10 early in the third quarter, the Saints put together an 18-play, 92-yard masterpiece that consumed an eye-popping 11:29 off the clock to produce what eventually became the game-winning touchdown in a 20-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round.

"That was tough, but we're built for it," left tackle Terron Armstead told NFL.com. "That was a championship drive."

quote:

After battling back from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit, the tide of the game clearly turned in the Saints' favor in the third quarter.

And though the series of plays may be worthy of a nickname or a place in NFL lore, the drive featured a lot of ups and downs.

The Saints were penalized three times, including two holding infractions and one committed by left guard Andrus Peat which negated a touchdown, while the Eagles were penalized once.

New Orleans also faced two second-and-20 plays, but still converted first downs, including one after facing a third-and-16 when quarterback Drew Brees connected with wide receiver Michael Thomas for 20 yards to move to the Eagles' 12-yard line.

Including the four penalties, both teams were on the field for an unofficial 22 plays.

"I was just told we gained 117 yards on that drive," Brees said in his postgame news conference.

"I'm not sure if that's a record because of the penalties that kept setting us back. We went on an 117-yard drive to take the lead in the third quarter and really didn't look back.

That was the turning point in the game."

Brees is correct, of course, as the Eagles blinked and never recovered, and the Saints would add a field goal to go up 20-14 in the fourth quarter.

But it was the third quarter when the Saints essentially announced they were taking the game after seeing the Eagles' defenders tiring.

"You can definitely feel it," right guard Larry Warford said. "I mean, I felt it. I was getting tired myself.

But when you start getting that momentum, those types of drives, you smell that vulnerability. You can smell that they're getting tired. You can see it, you can feel it."

quote:

Defensive tackle Tyeler Davison, who watched his offensive teammates in amazement from the sidelines, agreed emphatically.

"We knew that we had our foot on their neck basically, metaphorically speaking," Davison said.

"When the offense does something like that and we had a few stops on our side of the ball, it leaves the other team feeling like there's nothing they can do.

"So, yeah, when we saw that, it was just reminiscent of what the offense has been doing all year, letting us rest on the sideline while they have an 11-minute, 22-play drive. That was great for the defense."

The Saints capped off the soul-crushing drive when Thomas hauled in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Brees.

And after the game, the All-Pro wide receiver gave out plenty of credit to teammates for not faltering after the early deficit and using the third-quarter drive to take control of the game.

"That's a testament to the guys we have, the execution we play with, the leader we have behind center, the offensive line," said Thomas, who finished the game with 12 catches for 171 yards and the score on 16 targets.

"People don't just come in and do those type of things and just impose their will on teams and drive the ball down. And that's what we did."

The win sets up a rematch for the Saints against the Los Angeles Rams in next weekend's NFC Championship Game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, with the winner advancing to the Super BowlLIII in Atlanta.

The Saints defeated the Rams 45-35 in Week 9 of the regular season.

Better cut down on the penalties.

I love our balanced offense. No way Saints pulls off a 92 yard, 11min drive pre 2017.

That was an incredible drive. I couldn't believe the penalties they overcame on it.

The bye week was a huge part of why we had that drive. We're resting while they're getting beat up in Chicago, and playing their 6th(?) game out of 7 on the road here.

Their offense and defense just wore down and we ran it out.

I'll never forget that drive. Ever.

After every penalty, I screamed "o, come the f**k on! Really!?" at my TV. But the rest of that whole drive, particularly on third downs, I was literally exactly like this:

That drive and the secondary getting that game sealing pick washed some of the bad taste of the last few trips to the div playoffs

“Dat drive” was one of the most unbelievable drives I’ve ever witnessed the Saints perform and there have been some great ones over the years. MT13 put the team on his back and Drew wasn’t missing him. With half of the BS penalties on the drive, what really stuck it to everyone in there was Mike getting interfered and still strong manning that TD. Pure perfection

And one of the penalties (on Unger) was totally bogus. Sweet drive.

And after the bye week, this type of tough game was the best game we could have. They will be ready for the Rams.

In a sense, all those penalties only helped to extend the drive. Eagles d was already crashing from their first half adrenaline high. That drive basically drained them of anything they had left in the tank

Sometime things happen for a reason.

I heard after the game that we actually gained 117 yards on that drive. Wow!

I was coming to ask what was the actual yardage total?

The 117 does that include yards negated on penalties are just all the positive yards as a result of penalties?

92 yard drive, 25 yards in penalties, 117 total yards from scrimmage.
I don't think they count penalties in the yards from scrimmage stats.

Yeah...
but my questions is a different one.

If drew completed a 20 yard pass that was called back for holding...
that will add an additional 10 yards to the drive, therefore the 117 yards would included the additional 10 yards required to get the first down but it wouldn’t include the 20 yard pass..

I understand why.

I was just curious how many yards was gained total taking penalties out of the equation (which you can’t) in other words if there were 21 plays on the drive what was the total net yards gained on the drive. (All the positive yards totaled)

Post game Taysom said he had the choice to check out of the fake but the Eagles weren't set so he stuck with it. BS! They were set and I think they knew the fake was coming... they just couldn't stop that big mf'er.

We started on the 8 and had 3 penalties against us. Philly had one against them (don't remember what it was or how many yards).

Only the Philly penalty counts as yardage gained on the drive. Our penalties just reset the LOS, thus how we were able to gain an additional 25 yards. I know there were at least two holds that counts for 20 yards of the LOS being reset. Don't recall the other two penalties.

But if you are asking penalties aside how many yards did we gain it's 92. We went from the 8 to the end zone.

Edit:
Just read that the Philly penalty was 5 yards, so taking that out the offense gained 112 yards (counting the penalties on us that reset the LOS).

The only thing missing from that article are the words:
YOU CAN'T GUARD MIKE

He's a headcase off the field but as a Saints WR he is an absolute delight. I hope he plays his entire career here. That kid is truly something special.

I'm a bit OCD... Shouldn't it be "Can't Cover Mike"?
I always think basketball when I hear the word guard.
