some other country taking their anthem more seriously
I hope another country doesn't take their Anthem more seriously than we do. That would be kind of pathetic on our part.

Is that what we are aiming to be?
No, we're not trying to be Russia or China (or even worse...a woman living in the Middle East). That's kind of the point. We should be thankful that we live in a free country without persecution & government interference.
Many people have died & dedicated their entire lives to secure these freedoms for us. How can you not see why this Navy Commander is pissed off? Everyone has a perspective...try & look at it from his. I'd like to expound on the topic, but I'll just leave it at that. This is a football board.

This! And people who take it as such are clueless morons. The NFL is one of the few organizations that is really positive to the military and veterans, and these protests, which I don’t even really agree is the best way to get their message across, have absolutely NOTHING to do with them. I’ve lost a lot of respect for many servicemen during this ordeal, which is sad because I’ve revered the armed forces so much since I was a child.

Yeah, and the confederate flag wasn't about white supremacy. But you notice that protesters don't get to frame the argument. It's what public perception dictates is the root cause.

1. Kneeling isn't disrespectful. People act like it's giving someone the bird
2. The flag doesn't represent the military.
3. Grown people crossing their arms and hmphing over what other grown people do is pathetic. America isn't a residential neighborhood, and we're not all part of the HOA.
4. People should pay attention to what the players are protesting, because it's not merely a race issue. Some yuckhead cop could mess up or kill a family member of yours and it's next to impossible to get them prosecuted. If you're lucky you'll get a settlement, which is also messed up because we have to pay for it. Regardless of what you believe about how race is involved or the frequency of these incidents, how they play out is not right.

fans and owners want to police black fans and players. Always.

I think people understand why they are protesting they just disagree with doing it during something that represents our nation and our military. I absolutely agree that there are people of all creeds and color that experience social injustice and targeting. I think a lot of the more productive publicized cases of all of this are people putting themselves in positions to fail. Then the entire movement to stop oppression and social injustice is tainted by these few bad eggs. It’s the true cases of injustice and racism, not just with black people, that people don’t hear about are what really drives someone, including Colin Kaepernick and other players, to want to do something about it. I get that they have more of a stage than some people and that it can be more effective because of their popularity but in my opinion they are going about it the wrong way. Kneeling before or during an anthem isn’t doing anything about racism or social injustice it’s creating more division while nothing changes. People have been protesting for decades about different things but it doesn’t do anything but often entice violence and divide people. I served in the military and while I don’t agree with kneeling during the anthem, I don’t see harm in the team kneeling together before the anthem, however because of the way it all started it isn’t bringing attention to anything but those people that are kneeling or sitting during the anthem.

quote:Not kind of. That statement was unprofessional. They do not put out a statement belittling the players who sat during the anthem, but belittle a veteran (during the fake "Salute to Service" month at that) who chose not to receive an award from them because he was offended by the players' actions. So, what they are saying is that the players are entitled to do what they want regardless of who it offends and those that it does offend can go to hell.
The Saints were kind of a-holes in that statement in the article.

They booed because they were disrespecting the flag and country
Then because they were disrespecting the military
now its
and
Whatever if you want to hate on people that's your choice just like it is theirs to kneel. People can at least quit moving the goalposts of why they are melting about it.

I understand not wanting to disrespect the flag, but this is getting old and people need to look past the flag. Maybe these guys protested the "wrong" way if there is a wrong way to protest, but they have adjusted their protest as to not offend all the flag/military loving people around the county. Can we now at least have a discussion about the real issues they face and get our heads out of the gutter and be open to another persons view for just 2.5 seconds.

METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints released a statement Thursday saying it is "unfortunate and disappointing" that a retired Navy commander who declined an honor at Sunday's game has been telling media outlets he no longer supports NFL football because of player protests throughout the league before and during the national anthem.
did the saints hire the lsu PR staff? that's bush league

Draping a coffin with a flag is a trick to make you think that these people died for good reasons.

I've supported the players the whole time in this. Because I think the outrage is people don't want to believe what they are actually kneeling for is going on.
I tell people instead of bitching why don't we try listening to what they are trying to say instead of yelling faux outrage.
It would be hypocritical of me not to give the same leverage to this veteran. He has the exact same right to refuse as the players did to kneel. So if the I support the players right to kneel then I support his right to refuse an award.
I think the saints response is a little petty and that kills me to say that. It could have been handled a little better.

It’s not about disrespecting the military... it’s about disrespecting the flag that we fight for. It may not mean as much to you, which is fine, When you have been through some of the situations that you go through in war and that’s the only constant thing you have to turn to, you view it a little different.

I watched the players last week before the game just because. When they started to kneel it looked very awkward for a few of them like they didn't know what they wanted to do
I don't boo them, but I wish they'd drop it. It's always been about keeping politics out of sports for me.
