The New Orleans Saints had an overall successful picking in the 2023 NFL Draft, but the team has landed in the bottom half of Dan Hanzus of NFL.com’s power rankings. Still, that’s an improvement from their previous placement, and they’re the only NFC South team to rank inside the top-20.

Hanzus had the Saints at No. 18 overall in the post-draft standings, putting an emphasis on the additions the team made at running back:

The uncertainty surrounding Alvin Kamara — currently facing conspiracy to commit battery and substantial bodily harm charges — had to be a significant driving force in New Orleans’ decision to invest a third-round pick in TCU running back Kendre Miller. The Saints added Jamaal Williams in free agency, but more depth was a necessity with Kamara facing his legal issues and a possible suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Miller’s agility and vision helped make him a star in college; the youthful jolt he can provide is welcome news for a Saints running game that ranked in the bottom half of the league in yards per carry last season.
It will be interesting to see how things play out as the team looks to build up some position groups after some ups and downs since the Drew Brees area and how well this holds true in the years to come.

As for the rest of the NFC South: Hanzus put the Atlanta Falcons at No. 23 with the Carolina Panthers at No. 25, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rank No. 29. He’s not especially high on the Saints but they are seen as the best team in a bad division.

Jaamal Williams is going to be a great addition to the team particularly in the red zone. If Kendre Miller can work on his pass blocking we are going to have quite a stable of rb's.

In a way I like the approach the Saints took this year in the draft.

They picked a few players that were team captains. So obviously those guys were committed to their teams. I think that is saying something seeing how there are so many transfers because of the portal in CFB today.

Atlanta did make some moves in free agency in the secondary, but their D-line isn't scaring anyone rushing the passer. Grady Jarrett is good but that's pretty much it.

The Panthers have a good defense and it remains to be seen what their offense will look like this year.

Supposedly Andy Dalton will be the starter when the season starts.

Okay then.

No objections here.

Tampa Bay might be in the Caleb Williams sweepstakes.

The Saints addressed need in their draft (at least early on) and they did so with guys who fit their preferred player profile...even if those weren't as highly rated across the board.

At worst, they have the most accomplished QB in the NFC South. The OL should be ok. The WR group could be good if Thomas is something close to his pre-2020 level. The defense is concerning with the front 7 depletions, but Allen has kept them competitive on that side of the ball. Hopefully that continues.

Outside of Philadelphia, the NFC as a whole seems wide open. SF has the best roster behind (or maybe ahead of Philly), but a lot of uncertainty at QB. LA is aging. Rogers is out of GB. Seattle, Minnesota, Dallas, NY COULD all be good. But does any one truly trust their QBs to be consistently great?

there was some clown on the radio trying to claim that carolina has the best qb in the division right now. made me laugh. dude hasnt even taken a practice snap in the league yet and he was saying it so definitively.

The division is so bad anybody could win, on paper we seem best-equipped

The NFC is nothing behind the Eagles and 49ers, so going on an unlikely run is possible given single elimination format

it does seem DA went back to paytons original goal of only bringing in players of high moral and emotional character.

i think the downfall of this team was when payton gave up on that idea and started bringing in serfish disruptive and often racist players which destroyed the team chemistry

Agreed. I think people in general (not Hanzus it seems, but others) are overrating the Panthers who have zero weapons on offense, but underrating the Falcons. I like their additions in FA and I think unless their QB situation is a complete disaster they’ll be pretty decent and probably our main competition for the divisio.

I suppose you could argue Andy Dalton is better (or at least more accomplished) than Carr.

I feel the Saints will be better this season than last.
I hope DA learned alot from last year.
Saw a interview with a couple of offensive players last season that said in practice when they would make a mistake
there wasn`t a coach who corrected them.If DA doesnt
change the discipline on the O he wont be arround in 24.
Lets hope he has progressed as a coach.

I think Carolina is going to be tuff to beat. They should be higher than Falcons.
Solid D and they did a great job at WO. Clark, the Minnesota dude forgot his name, grabbed Mingo from Ole Miss, and have Terrance Marshall. He will be a stud this year.
