The 2022 New Orleans Saints season is officially off and running, as the team held its first practice session of its summer training camp.

New head coach Dennis Allen led the team through a relatively short practice, covering roughly 90 minutes on the outdoor fields at the team’s Airline Drive practice facility.

Here were the highlights.

Attendance
The Saints had near 100 % attendance for the first day of training camp, with the only exceptions being defensive ends Marcus Davenport (Physically Unable to Perform list) and Tanoh Kpassagnon (illness), receiver Rashid Shaheed (non-football injury list), safety Tyrann Mathieu (excused absence) and linebacker Pete Werner.

Werner was present for practice, but was working off to the side with an undisclosed injury. Allen declined to offer any specifics on Werner’s injury after practice, but the coach did say he’s hopeful Werner would not miss much time with the injury.

Running back Devine Ozigbo briefly left practice after colliding with linebacker Andrew Dowell during team drills, but he returned to make a nice catch and run.

Several players who did not participate in the Saints’ organized team activities and minicamp this offseason were out on the practice field Wednesday, including Taysom Hill, Marcus Maye and Payton Turner.

Oh, and a guy named Michael Thomas was out there. The Saints star receiver did not participate in full team drills, but he otherwise went through the same practice as his teammates — a huge step in the right direction.

Winston was sharp
Quarterback Jameis Winston looks ready to put any lingering questions about his health to bed.

Participating in 11-on-11 drills for the first time since he tore his ACL last October, Winston completed all but one of his pass attempts during the full team period, and his lone misfire was not his fault: Winston placed a perfect pass to receiver Kevin White on a comeback route, but White dropped it.

Winston showed no signs of the limp that was apparent during minicamp. When asked if he would be on any sort of “pitch count” during practice — meaning, if he would sit out certain situations or periods to avoid putting undue stress on his knee — Winston merely laughed and shook his head.

Hello, Jarvis
Winston wasted little time connecting with one of his newest pass-catchers, finding Jarvis Landry for a huge gain with a bullet down the left seam.

The pair showed off some nice early chemistry on the play, with Winston unleashing his pass right as Landry was breaking off his route toward the middle of the field. Landry caught the pass in stride in front of rookie corner Alontae Taylor, and the veteran receiver took off upfield, running away from linebacker D’Marco Jackson.

Three stars
DE Payton Turner: Allen singled Turner out for having an impressive pass rush win, but it was unclear which snap he was referring to. Turner burned backup tackle Jerald Hawkins with a speed rush twice, once getting home for a “sack” and the other time forcing a rushed throw.

TE Adam Trautman: The third-year tight end made a pair of nice grabs during full team drills, including one that would’ve gone for about 20 yards down the seam. It’s a small sample size, but those sorts of explosive plays were noticeably absent from Trautman during camp last year.

QB Andy Dalton: Ask about anybody on the Saints and they’ll tell you how pleased they’ve been with Dalton as the No. 2 quarterback. He showed why with an impressive day during team drills, completing seven of his eight attempts (though his one misfire was a near interception he threw into coverage).

Lineup notes
Full disclaimer: This is simply how the Saints are lining up on the first day of training camp, and this will change throughout as the team readies itself for its Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Veteran offensive lineman James Hurst took the first team repetitions at left tackle while first-round rookie Trevor Penning slotted in behind him. That’s potentially setting up to be one of the more interesting position battles of this training camp, and Penning is going to have to show he has the chops to step in right away.

With Werner sitting practice out and the Saints operating out of their base defensive look, Demario Davis, Zack Baun and Kaden Elliss served as the starting linebacker group.

The first group of punt returners featured Deonte Harty, Easop Winston and rookie wideout Chris Olave.

Up next
The Saints return to practice fields with a closed session Thursday at 9 a.m.

It is.

And between Harty, Hill, AK, Landry and Olave MT doesn't have to come in with his hair on fire(it will ignite at some point in season) or think he has to do it all by himself. Who the 5th and 6th wr's are going to be is something fun to watch this camp.

Kevin White might legitimately have the worst hands of any player in NFL history, not just receivers lol.

Not super surprising Jarvis is burning our 25 year old rookie special teams gunner.

Not surprising a pels fan is on here shitting on a rookie when none of us know how he will turn out. Kinda reminds me of last year when yall were calling to trade Zions fat arse and calling Griff a used car salesman. Somethings wrong with yall for real. Yall are chicken littles and look dumb now

I’ve been quite consistent with my Pels, Saints, and LSU takes. I’m actually consistently one of the bigger Zion defenders on the board. If you actually evaluate every move Griff has made, it’s not like he has been perfect. It is legitimately fair to criticize him on some draft, free agent, trade, and coaching misses. If you asked Griff, he’d straight up admit to most of those mistakes. I’m glad the team is in a good spot now.

But don’t act like the Pels fanbase is anymore toxic than the Saints fanbase. A good portion of y’all hate on Taysom while he’s a 20 position player that is 6-2 as QB and the same segment of people doing that were worshipping Siemens even though he was 0-4. This board has legitimately been trash since 2019 save like 4 posters.

I’ve been on record since Day 1, Taylor was a bad value pick and he has no shot in hell at beating out Adebo.

I’m allowed to have that opinion. So far I am correct, at least about him having no chance in hell at beating out Adebo.

Good for you

Never said he was perfect but my point still stands. Yall called him a used car salesman so much it became a meme. More rational fans who wanted to take a more wait and see approach were proven correct.

Idk yall seem like chicken littles to me at least on this site

Both are bad at qb, haven't seen much Seimien love to be honest

Really going out on a limb there that a rookie 2nd rounder has no shot to beat out our 2nd year CB2 who played well. You can go on record all you want to but it's still just speculation at this point. Too premature to say if it was a bad value pick or that he can't someday beat out Adebo. And if he can become a solid contributor on this defense then what does it matter if he ever "beats out Adebo" or not?

There was a lot of Trevor love on this board even when he was 0-2 or 0-3. I think eventually people figured it out, but even then, people were still shitting on Taysom harder and all that guy does is pour his heart and soul on the field and mostly win games despite his shortcomings as a pure passer.

If you compare a Saints fan mentality to a Pels fans mentality, you are right, there is a bit more angst/chicken little/etc

The national media has attacked the Pels left and right. The injuries have been ridiculous. And ultimately, the Pels have never won anything. So that does lead to having a bit of a different attitude as a fanbase. It’s a hungry, angsty, on edge fanbase. The saints won a super bowl and technically almost won several more. And the national media actually respects the Saints franchise and isn’t constantly pushing trade narratives for our star football players.

But I’ll admit, I’m def a part of that Pels angsty anxious fanbase sometimes. Its hard not to be when things usually go wrong. It’s actually a bit better now at the moment and I think the tenor of the board mostly reflects that.

The Adebo/Taylor thing stems from a thread a couple months ago where Ireland said he would compete with Adebo for 2nd corner. A decent amount of posters took that to heart, when it was really just coach/front office speak. Adebo was freaking awesome last year many games. I just said there was no chance in hell, based off of how good Adebo was for us, and Taylor being an older player who technically needs to learn/iron down a position since he is more of a hybrid player.

I do go over the top with the drafting a gunner 49th line. I’ll admit that. At that time, it just felt like we had more holes. We have addressed a lot of holes since the draft, so I’m better with it now. I just don’t expect a huge impact year 1.

Yeah they was wrong about Trevor lol. I love Taysom as a player just not at starting QB

This makes sense thanks for clearing that up

I did not know this. I agree with you though there's no way in hell he beats out Adebo this year unless he has a huge regression

I gotcha lol. I just remember you melting around the draft about it so I was wondering if maybe Taylor banged your girl or something

If the lights come on for Trautman and MT is even 80% of what he was before, look out!!! This offense is STACKED.

Quite honestly don’t know how he is still employed.

At this point, he needs some Clifford Franklin “Coach, it looks like I just jacked off an elephant” glue on his hands.

I think y’all are putting a lot of stock into the dropped pass and the lack of reps last year didn’t give him much of a chance. At one point he was a first round pick. It doesn’t hurt to keep him around as long as possible and give him a chance until the last cuts
