I was just a kid when this guy was drafted and played for the Saints. I am not sure he can be topped as the all time worst draft pick.

For those of you who are too young to know.... he was the 11th pick in the 1979 draft as a kicker and punter. Somehow he stayed on the Saint roster 4 years. I only remember him throwing a pick six in OT against the Falcons on his first pick when the punt went over his head.

Just remember... what ever happens in this draft, it is highly unlikely the Saints can top this crapper as the worst pick in the draft.

87' - #11 DT Shawn Knight

97' - #10 OG Chris Naeole

Erxleben was a beast at Texas! He is the only three-time All-American punter in NCAA history, being a consensus choice in 1976, 1977, and 1978. But yeah, terrible pick at #11!

If and that's a big if Davenport doesn't turn it around he'll go down as the worse because he cost us two 1st rounders.

This could easily be the worst pick in Saints history. Erxleben was a kicker and punter. The logic behind that selection floors me.

The list of the Saints' notorious 1st round picks is a long one, starting with the first (Les Kelly) but Erxleben will always be the poster child of it.

Truly awful. He didnt even kick when he played for Saints and his punting was average at best. Had terrible form and was never consistent. Not his fault the Saints picked him first round though! Too bad he couldnt live up to the hype.

From wikipedia:

Shawn Matthew Knight (born June 4, 1964) is a former American football defensive tackle. He was drafted in the first round by the New Orleans Saints, 11th overall in the 1987 NFL Draft. He played just three seasons in the NFL playing one season for the Saints, Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals each.

In his senior year at Brigham Young University, Knight recorded 16 sacks. When Knight's pro career began, he reported late to training camp and fell out of favor with the coaching staff. After his rookie season, New Orleans traded Knight to the Denver Broncos in exchange for Ted Gregory. Knight played 31 games in his NFL career, with only one start. The only official statistic that Knight recorded in 31 games was a fumble recovery.

And now I have fallen down the wiki rabbit hole:

quote:

Theodore Anthony Gregory (born February 11, 1965) is a former professional American football defensive tackle who played one season for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League. Gregory was drafted by the Denver Broncos following a sterling collegiate career at Syracuse. Gregory listed his height as 6'1".[1] However, a shocked Dan Reeves, who is also listed as 6'1"[2] commented, "I'm taller than he is!" upon meeting Gregory after the draft. By Reeves' estimate, Gregory was closer to 5'9".[3] Gregory had injured his knee in his last collegiate game, and the knee gave out during training camp. Following scathing criticism from the press for wasting a pick on damaged goods, the Broncos traded him to the Saints for Shawn Knight before the season.[4] He is now regarded as one of the biggest draft busts in Broncos' history.[5] After the Gregory incident the Broncos began meeting with potential draft picks prior to the draft, a practice they had not previously engaged in.[citation needed] Gregory blew out his knee in this third game with the Saints, and never played in the NFL again. After a series of failed business ventures drained his life savings, he took a job as a construction worker, only to have that end due to a ruptured disc in his back that temporarily rendered him a paraplegic.[4] Gregory placed 8th in Deadspin's "The 100 Worst NFL Players of All Time"

85 Alvin Toles wasn't bad enough to make the list?

What makes the Sullivan pick even worse is that I thought we were making the trade up to get Troy Polamalu.
Every time I watched Polamalu play or those dam Head and Shoulders commercials I think of us drafting that fat tub of crap.

That was in his first game of his career, he pulled a hamstring warming up before week 2, missed the rest of the season. Saints signed Garo Yepremian.

The following season he made 2 of 5 FGs, before losing kicking duties. Never made another FG in his career.

Four years after the Saints cut him, he would have just a single punt for the Lions.

Naole doesn't belong in the same breath as those others. Dude was an NFL starter for like 10 years

Naole was hurt at beginning of training camp at Lacrosse he was looking good up to that point - when he went down you could hear Mora all across the field and it wasnt nice

Toles career ending knee injury 3 years in is kinda hard to put him on that list. He was also competing against Mills and Johnson. I still don't under that pick.

Trading up is disastrous if you miss on the pick.

P.S.

I can remember being genuinely excited when we drafted Erxleben.

My worst memory of Erxleben is the first game of 1980.

Just coming off the 8-8 season and so much promise going into 1980. Erxleben lines up for the game tying field goal at the end of the game against the 49ers-- I think it was like a 25-30yrd field goal and a Miss.
