That’s a good play/situation to consider, but I can’t see a team planning for a situation like the FSU/LSU play.
But, back to your point about it being a dumb play; another factor to consider is what if 43 slow plays it likes he’s giving the TD, then as McKinnon gets to the 5 #43 suddenly initiates contact to drive him OOB. They were only 2-3 yards from sideline, so momentum easily could have carried him out w enough force and drive, while holding him up.
That play would then have a completely different context. IMO, I didn’t mind the call, but would have emphasized that he should not bounce it outside the numbers.

In that case , if the defender throws him in to the end zone before he is down then it is a touchdown.

Not a rule anymore at all. Lineman and offensive players form scrums and can push players now until forward progress is stopped. I’m not sure why this question is even confusing. If they are holding him up, pushing forward then forward progress isn’t stopped. The hard part is keeping him up if he’s trying to go down.

Yes, I believe they could have, but in the moment it would be hard for the db to process all that.
For example - since the rule change of no force out being called on a sideline reception, how easy would it be for the defender to not leap and stretch to try and break up a pass but instead keep his feet and push the receiver out after he catches the ball before his feet come back down. Easy Peazy, but they always try to break up the pass and the receiver makes a great catch over him and comes down with both feet in. Infuriating.

They can push; I said they cannot pull. There is a difference.
RULE 12 ARTICLE 4. ASSISTING THE RUNNER AND INTERLOCKING INTERFERENCE. No offensive player may:
(a) pull a runner in any direction at any time;
(b) use interlocking interference, by grasping a teammate or by using his hands or arms to encircle the body of a teammate in an
effort to block an opponent; or
(c) push or throw his body against a teammate to aid him in an attempt to obstruct an opponent or to recover a loose ball
