Fox Sports will reportedly swing for the fences if longtime No. 1 game analyst Troy Aikman leaves to work for Amazon.
According to a new report from Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy, Fox wants to hire New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton to replace Aikman. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback could leave to become part of Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football” streaming coverage next season.
“[Fox] has to go big if they need to replace Troy,” former executive producer at NFL Network and senior producer at Fox Sports Eric Weinberger told McCarthy. “I’m not sure Sean would be as bombastic as [former ESPN “Monday Night Football” analyst] Jon Gruden. But I think Sean would be more opinionated than Gruden.”
Earlier today, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that if Payton wanted to step away from coaching and enter the broadcasting world, he’d have some opportunities waiting for him.
“TV networks have been circling around him for a minute. He knows there’s significant interest there if he decides to step away from coaching,” Garafolo tweeted.
Earlier this month, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler mentioned Payton, Rams head coach Sean McVay and Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll as possible coaches who could attract attention from television networks.
The 58-year-old Payton has been the Saints’ head coach since 2006. His team went 9-8 in 2021, missing the NFC playoffs due to a tiebreaker with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Payton will be coaching the Saints.
FOX won’t be losing Aikman but they’d be idiots to hire Gruden after such a firestorm he faces.

Wouldn't the nfl frown on tv networks poaching sitting coaches?

Wtf? Why would mcvay leave?
Carroll would be absolutely horrible on tv.

While there seems to be a lot of smoke going around about Sean lately, some of these scenarios seem kind of ridiculous and are all over the spectrum from going to other teams to doing broadcasting. I'm sure when Sean decides to step away, everyone in the organization will know about it beforehand and a plan of action will already be in place to transition to his successor. I believe it's going to be either Dennis Allen or, in the event Allen accepts another job, Ryan Nielsen.

At some point a refutal has to come from somewhere, the longer it doesn't the heavier the smoke will get.

Saints will get a serviceable qb and Peyton will have them back in the playoffs next yr.

Until Jay Glazer says something, this is just the typical off season Payton to a big market bullshite.
Eventually, they will be right and gloat that they have been calling it.

Payton isn’t exactly fluid in the way he speaks. Not sure he would work great in the booth.

Why? The Saints and Sean Payton don't owe the media a damn thing. Why would they need to give a "refutal" to a story they made up.

And his habit of starting every sentence with "Look".
That'd be great.

As I recall Brees had that same habit. What Payton should do is mix in some Hebertesque ya knows.

“Listen”
Even if he did take a year off he seems like a guy that would want right back in the following season. Look how hard it was for parcells to fully let go of coaching. I don’t think sean would really fancy an executive role just to stay in the game.

They’re going to replace Aikman with a guy who has zero experience as a broadcaster? Yeah that tracks

I don’t understand this fascination of Payton doing TV.
I’m probably the biggest CSP fan there is, but I think he’d be HORRIBLE at color commentary. He has like no personality, he speaks in vague generalities, he’s soft spoken and reserved, just seems like a terrible fit for TV.
Sure he’s really smart about football, but the public doesn’t care about that. CSP is like one notch of excitement above Bill Belichek doing commentary. Would that be cool for hardcore fans or future coaches or something, for sure. But for 90% of viewers I think he’d be a big time fail. I’m not sure why networks would push for him

Did you say the same thing when Aikman replaced John Madden ? He had no experience either .
And for that matter madden had no experience when he took the job .
Oh yeah Tony Romo had no experience either .
And oh yea Jon Gruden had no experience.
So yea it would be a total shock if they hired Payton

Yep, I’d love to know what he’s thinking, but I can’t imagine him playing nice for the TV.
Also, he Has a boring delivery.

Payton has made it clear that he is no fan of Goodell. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if the league blocked him from getting a major announcing job. They’ve done much pettier shite and have to protect the shield.
