Jim should be aware of 'unwritten' rules from his bro.

Tonight will be a much better test of our defense. Blitz or not, San Fran is the suck.

Yeah that offense is going to be terrible with Alex Smith under center.

Who gives a shite why the saints blitzed so much, it's freakin football, the 49rs coaches and o-line should have been ready for a game of tackle football not 2 hand touch.

Idiotic or not, Jims face on the sideline was priceless. Not as good as Belichicks face in 09 on MNF, but still good.

Nice attempt at bait there. It's a shame I'm not going to get into a pissing match on the Saints board. You guys won a single game at home against the weakest Brady led NE team since 2001, congratulations. Bringing it up a mere two years after the fact shows your debating skills far exceed mine, and I wouldn't stand a chance. I admit defeat.

"Hey bro, I just called you up to ask you if there's anything I should know about unwritten rules, because attempting to resurrect a franchise that was basically gutted by an idiot, while trying to rework a depth chart that has no usable QB, and on top of the fact this is my first NFL job in over 8 years is just not enough work. I wouldn't want anyone to take offense in a preseason game, literally getting mad enough to not work on his own in game situations, but blitz mercilessly, in the end very slightly increasing the chance he misses out on a prospect because he was being very one dimensional."

I'm sure that's how it went down. I guess I just thought Payton would be above petty semantics like that, because he is a top 5 NFL head coach and seems like a genuinely good person.

I agree, how many times in the past did the 49ers and the refs steal games from us?

Good. I can't stand the 49ers, there were many frustrating years against those guys in the old NFC West. Like somone already said, I wish they were still in our division so we could kick the crap out of them twice a year.

he mad?

yeah.. he mad.

and we didn't just "beat" your team, we destroyed them in every aspect of football.

but back to the OP - has no one considered the fact that coaches usually have one game where they try out their blitz packages with their new players?

and no they won't do it again next week so the packers don't have much to watch.

I think we only got a piece of the story. I would have liked to ask Payton...did you attempt to call Harbaugh and couldn't catch up with him, maybe leaving a message? I'm sure that happens a lot with busy coaching schedules.

or when asked how to approach the game defensively, perhaps Payton realized he had not talked with Harbaugh and told Williams, what the heck, let 'em loose?

Without prior justification, I don't see the blitz 'em silly scenario just to be an a-hole to another coach.

I DO see 'em blitzing just to establish an aggressive nature, but there again, that's aimed at bettering the Saints, not punishing Harbaugh nor do I believe it was solely Harbaugh's responsibility to call Payton.

I really doubt there was any evil intent, although it makes for a juicier story when told at that angle.

I think if there was an 'unwritten' rule concerning coaches calling and discussing the game before a preseason game then his brother should have filled him in on that one.

Maybe the Saints did blitz too much against the Niners, but I think that will be our identity this year. We need to create pressure that leads to turnovers. I think that formula has proven effective.

I'm not sure how genuine of a guy Payton is, with the vicodin story and the rumors of his infidelity, but I agree that he is a top 5 coach. I don't think he is a role model that I would tell my kids to follow, but he is a good football coach. There are probably unwritten rules in most professions especially one like an NFL head coach. I'm not justifying or criticizing Payton's actions.
