Not giving it a click, but did he mention that Drew was injured vs. the Falcons, and that the beginning of his "decline" last year coincided exactly with that injury?

It's funny how things progress from observations to rumors to stories to fact without any substantiation at all. Downfall of America online.

All the more reason Teddy should have played during the playoffs

Over the remainder of the game, he went 10-of-15 for 115 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. The Saints didn't need much from Brees in a game during which they ran for 150 yards and the Falcons turned the ball over four times, but when they called on their star quarterback, he was efficient and extremely effective. Is it possible that Brees rode an adrenaline high (or a painkilling shot) in the game, woke up sore, and then wasn't the same player after that Thursday night game? I suppose, but Occam's razor suggests that Brees wouldn't have been his usual dominant self for three quarters after the hit before suddenly declining the following week against Dallas. I'm skeptical the hit played a significant role in his falloff.

10/15 for 115 yards isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire. If I remember correctly a few of those touchdowns were pretty wide open.

I still think he was injured. The drop off was too great. It was similar to points in the 2010 season when he obviously sustained a knee injury and the team never really mentioned it.

People also forget that he and Payton kept several injuries under wraps the last few years. I was at the Atlanta game, sitting behind the Saints bench, and Drew literally spent the whole game moving his shoulder around. He was hurt and it was obvious during the rest of his games.

Hopefully this gives him more motivation for the season. I like a focused angry Brees!

the problem is if he has been injured, the fall off COULD be quick like manning's was. especially at this age. we shall see.

All teams have bumps and bruises at the end of the season.
The oline being banged up was more of a factor than any issue Brees had.

Yeah well they keep it under wraps for Brees. But yes the o line was in bad shape for the nfccg sadly.

But it sure ain't bad.

If he averages 30 throws a game, that translates to 20/30 (67% comp %) 230 yards, maybe as many as 4 or 5 TDS, and no picks.

When you combine that with the 150 yards on the ground that's a pretty freakin' good day for the offense.

EDIT: FTR there were 9 regular season games (out of 15 he played) last season where Brees had 265 yards or less.

Every time Brees has a rough stretch there's always some injury that's blamed and probably rightly so.

Just going on memory, several of those are when he's tried to make a tackle. I think the only thing to take from this is that Brees should NEVER attempt to take on a block or tackle anyone unless it's the playoffs or something.

I don't buy the "he got hurt" or the "his arm wore down" late season struggle. The late season drop in production was due to playing 2 really good defenses on the road (Dallas and Carolina).

He was red hot in the second half vs Tampa. He smoked Pitt's defense. And he had a really good game against Philly in the playoffs.

I can't find it just now, but there are hard stats that show his down the field effectiveness took a hard dive after that game.

And he didn't necessarily "smoke" Pittburghs defense. Good yardage (326), but only the late TD, and got bailed out by a phantom PI to get one of the TD's. And I wouldn't categorize the Philly game as "really good", scoring only 20 points on after putting up 48 in the regular season, and we caught a huge break on the Alshon brick hands or we might lose it.

Not saying Drew is done, but there's no denying he struggled towards the end.

Its so tough because you want your QB to have that competitive spirit to make a tackle on an INT.

But in a regular season game when you’re already ahead in the division... I just don’t know if it’s worth it.

And it looked like Brees realized this when he had about a 15-yard angle on Donte Jackson and didn’t try to stop the pick-2

Brees didn't miss the Diggs tackle and didn't miss the call vs. the Rams. He put us in a position to win both.

I'm glad that there is some banter about a Brees decline. This will fuel him.

The only thing in decline here is ESPN

Yep. Similarly to in 2010 when very clearly tested his knee for medial/lateral stability on camera and went through a rough patch (for him) afterwards.

Ill-advised??? Kirkwood got fricking tackled to the ground That shouldve been PI.

I'm just sick of seeing these articles every week. What pisses me off is we don't see these same questions raised about Brady. He wasnt great at all last year, but you never hear a word about his decline. Barnwells opening paragraph is so fricking weak.
