I've been saying for years that Ireland and loomis have relied on their prototype too much.

It seemed like they wouldn't go outside of their prototype even if a player had great production and skills. Notice they would never take smaller players at end/edge.

There is nothing wrong with ras if you use it in conjunction with what they put on the field. Ireland would also look for 4 year guys supposedly.

Marcus Williams ras 8.15
Kamara 8.05

Payton and Ireland both followed Parcells blueprint for identifying guys

Kelvin Banks had the lowest RAS of a Saint first rounder since Kenny Vaccaro. Olave was also a sub 9 RAS guy. So it’s not gospel

RAS is just combine data combined into this made up metric that was made to easy categorized players. Teams have always tried drafting the best athletes because the best players are the best athletes. There isn't some conspiracy.

So close to being a Saint. Detroit jumped in front of us to snipe him, and we end up with Broughton.

The issue is when the gym rat doesn't meet being a great football player.

Poor technique
Inexperience
Poor football iq
Bad history of health

That's why our depth and talent sucks

An 8, however, means that they are in the top 20% of all players at their position in athleticism. So while they might seem "low" compared to others, there have been players far lower that have had success.

I found a study from 2003-2023 that showed all the top 10 backs in fantasy each year, and there have been players as low as in the mid 4s that have achieved top 10 seasons.

While high level athleticism does tend to lead to more success in the league, even mid players can achieve success. So they definitely need to loosen up on prototype.

And yeah the 4 year thing was something I forgot about. That, along with things like captaincy, have definitely been weighted too heavily in addition to RAS. These things should be more like bonus checks for players, while production and tape needs to take much more precedence.

This has been present for as long as the nfl existed. Zero to do with RAS

It has to do with over valuing RAS versus other metrics.

Production. Watching tape to see technique, football iq, and how much they are impacting things vs those around them (talent level of teammates and opponents).

Yeah, I wasn't saying that was low.

Relying solely on RAS scores is fricking stupid.

Doesn’t happen. Using RAS is the same thing as using workout data to analyze a player. What is so hard to understand

It’s combine/pro day data made into a cumulative score. The wheel isn’t being reinvented.

blaming RAS is equal to blaming combine/pro day moving players up who are otherwise underwhelming for reasons:
1. Poor quality play on the field
2. Raw athleticism that you can't teach
3. Small school

Trevor Penning was a 9.96, all the potential in the world but small school and poor technique and here we are a few years later.

The next OL pick after him: Tyler Smith 8.87, considered passable as a pass protector and already excelled as a run blocker; but he showed a lot more technique and "football" IQ

that's just the obvious hindsight one we have on our team, but there's been times where we've drafted and it looked like we cared more about the upside rather than the floor and its bitten us in the arse.

Foskey - 9.61 RAS (DE) over Branch - 5.27 (S) was another obvious one

This happens to all teams every single draft for decades. Not just the saints. Evaluating players is hard & nuanced

That was kind of my point. Another point I was making is the prototype. If the height and weight didn't match their prototype, they would pass on perfectly good players.

Imo you have to look at the production first. And I'm not saying it's easy cause it's obviously not. It's much harder to draft in real time. You have to pivot on the spot when they guy you wanted gets picked.

It's much easier after the fact to say I would've picked this guy.

I do think it started that year too. One issue is guys like Davenport and Turner had high RAS but not standout production. Penning & Saldiveri were small school RAS guys. Ruiz was a RAS guy who was seemingly drafted off that without a specific position in mind

In the same breath, guys like Hendrickson, Kaden Ellis, Werner, Adebo were high RAS gems.

You have guys like AK, Ceedy Duce, Marcus Williams, Anzalone, Baun who weren’t RAS beast either. So in reality I think it’s been a bit of a mixed bag

Classic Gyno.

Your posts always reek of you re-wording all of the Saints info you google or read on your phone.

(Hey Grok. Tell me about the Saints roster and RAS.)

I know for a fact that you’re not someone who gets paid to talk/report about LA sports. So get off the soap box.

How much X do you read a week? My guess is 4 hrs+

So stop using the internet to be the smartest guy on ST.
