Ranking worst quarterback contracts in NFL today

4. Derek Carr, Saints
Fully guaranteed: $60M
2024 cap hit: $12.6M
2025 cap hit: $51.4M
First year can be cut for cap savings: After 2024
That fully guaranteed total is very reasonable. And the Saints could technically save money if Carr is off the roster before the 2025 season, yet the savings would minuscule -- only $1.3 million with a corresponding $50.1 million dead cap hit. In short, absent juggling the financial books, which isn't unfamiliar to the Saints front office, Carr probably stays on the roster at least another year. Before 2026, if the contract stays intact as is, Carr's release would save New Orleans $28.6 million and he'd net the club $32.7 million.
And that $51.4 million cap hit isn't chump change. There are already three void years on Carr's deal, so there's minimal wiggle room for the club known for its propensity to kick the can down the road. Technically, New Orleans could restructure, yet it would just add more dead cap long after Carr is either on another roster or retired. Not exactly sound accounting practices.
Now, there's an argument to be made that not too long ago Carr was playing football that justified his current deal. Yet, given what we know now about the Panthers and Cowboys' defenses, those Week 1 and Week 2 shred sessions from Carr aren't as impressive as originally thought. He'll be 34 next March. At this stage, we know what type of quarterback Carr is. His deal isn't dreadful because of the short-term-ish exit possibility. But it's not anywhere close to a bargain.

complaining about QB contracts in the NFL is dumb. look around the league. it's the nature of the position unless you have a rookie.

If it was just Carr then it wouldn’t be a big deal. We’re running out of road to kick that can due to Loomis flooding the highway with dead money. As currently constructed, we’re going to be $97M+ over the cap going into next year.
We can’t keep restructuring contracts like loomis has been doing for much longer. The chickens are going to be coming home to roost

Lamar - 76% win - 2 MVPs
Dak - 63% win
Tua - 62% win
Carr - 45% win
Take your meds

Ehh Tua could be there cause of mushhead potential. But having Lamar there is more proof he's a moron.

I would think it would be TBD. Most of the wins were racked up while on their rookie contracts, right?

Carr isn't #4.
I can look at it right now and give you a top 4 without him.
Dak @ 60mil, #1 overall paid player, and continuing to show you every other year he plays a hard schedule and falls flat on his arse.
Lawrence @ 55mil, #2 overall paid player, despite doing EVERYTHING the could to support him. Drafting a #1 WR, paying for 2 other #2 guys, giving him a good RB and drafting another option. Investing into the OL. He continues to be average.
Watson @ 46mil, #11 overall paid player. Look at the entire team and you can easily say how fricking putrid he is.
Jones @40mil, #15 overall paid player. How they paid him is BONKERS to me.
Thats not even touching on Tua's concussion issues and the amount of guaranteed. Jalen Hurts an that up and down the past 2 years (while costing 14mil more than Carr). Matthew Stafford and his atrocious play this year. Aaron Rodgers and that mess up in NY

Carr has never been over .500 for his career and will retire with a losing career record. Just hard to fathom grouping him in with career winners

They are actually running out of contracts to restructure.

So I guess Archie was a really shitty QB?

Since there is a 4. I would say that he got this from one of those edgy online articles that is written by a neckbeard.

I never said Carr was shitty
Do you make excuses for all losing QBs or just Saints?

You and High Life use his record as evidence to insinuate that he is terrible. I look at the whole situation. He is a solid-good QB. He is not the fricking problem.
And using W/L records to judge a QB is short sighted and stupid

Justifying stupidity with more stupidity? And you’re using hindsight in most your examples. Stafford and Rodgers are hall of famers, not comparable. The difference is we paid for a guy that everyone already knew was bad. He just got fired by the raiders and we pay top dollar for a washed bum. If we took a chance on a young guy like Trevor Lawerence no one would give a shite. Yea Dallas, Cleveland and New York are about as dumb as we are. I guess we’re supposed to shut up and be happy about that?

Different game. That was damn near 50 years ago bud

He’s went 12-3 and got MVP votes before, and won 10 games another time. You think he’s just been on two good teams his whole career?
He played one of the worst schedules based on W/L in NFL history last season and couldn’t make the playoff
He will carry the largest or one of the largest (depends on year) caps hits on this team during his tenure. If he cannot elevate your team he is a large part of problem. I don’t fault him for his contract
Buddy you were citing QBR in another thread. We can get into the meat and potatoes if ya got time

They already have, and it’s been the case for years. Cam Jordan, Peat, and Ram were disasters that have yielded today’s bottom 5 roster.
And to think Loomis was this close (and still may) to adding Davonte Adams and another huge contract on a declining player.
He’ll probably give Kamara a top 5 rb extension as well.
