Positive from first preseason game

A big positive that stood out to me about tonight’s game is that both backup QB’s have real talent and potential. For the entire Brees tenure, we would draft a later round QB just to see them look overwhelmed in preseason. I’m not declaring Rattler or Haener as the next anything. But at least they look like they belong on an NFL roster.

Thank God, a silver lining. So glad we have quality guys holding tablets on the sidelines. On a serious note, who's the backup head coach? I have a feeling this one might not last the season. Jon Gruden? Could he complete my Gulf Coast Raiders puzzle that I can frame and hang on my wall next to my Dome Patrol poster and my 2009 Saints Superbowl picture?

No big injuries that I’ve seen!
Olave had a nice contested catch that he battled for!
Run game had a little success with Kamara.
Backup QBs both showed promise!
—Haener had the great throw stepping in the pocket delivering a strike to AT Perry that really saved his night from being just mediocre.
—Rattler showed quick decision making, quicker release than I recalled him having, and man the ball just flys out of his hands effortlessly. Also had good escape ability, you just hope as a rookie they don’t die on that sword after being behind backup o-line too long.
AT Perry seems to be a bit of a gamer. Name hasn’t popped in practice much but he continues to show-up when called upon in games
Talaiese Fuaga settled in some after 1st drive. Didn’t look like a pro bowler nor a bust, which is fine for a rookies first ever NFL action
Kyle Hergel, undrafted G #60, looked pretty good in the plays I watched him, albeit against other 3rd stringers I’m sure
Dallin Holker seemed to get a lot of snaps tonight. Played quicker than his 40 time would suggest. I saw a few decent blocks and also saw him stood up a couple times, but all good experience for him! Has some decent catches & RAC. I think he caught all balls thrown his way
D-Line (1st team) looked very active! Young & Bresee both showed quickness! Shepherd & Saunders both stuffed a few runs.
Willie Gay looked absolutely fantastic
Kool-Aid made some plays early then got beat a little later on. Similar to Fuaga, mixed bag that’s great experience for him
Alontae Taylor, even though he didn’t make a play on this I still thought it was great to see. He started as boundary CB in base 4-3, then when we went to nickel he moved inside to the slot and I think Rezjohn Wright when to outside CB. I just think it’s great how he embraced that role this offseason and look forward to his progression
Blake Grupe’s kick were fairly short but still he was 2/2
Charlie Smyth’s first ever kick was a game winner, also short yes but still
Lou Headley put 2 damn good punts inside the 20, and had good hang time on another. I did not think I would be saying that after last season
Matt Hayball’s first punt was boomed with great hang time & distance, actually out kicked the coverage. Would have been nice to see him plant his next one inside the 20 but it bounced through back of the end zone

Thanks for the rundown. I didn’t get to watch the game and I was coming here to get an idea of how we looked. Imagine my surprise when I got insightful knowledge about the teams performance last night.

Also, Penning WILL get Carr killed. If you hate Carr, you should be a huge Penning fan right now

11 plays through 2 drives I believe.
Penning has not yet “won” a single rep! He’s “held his own” on 1 play.
Occupied the defender just long enough on a handful of plays.
Got beat on 2-3 plays. One looked like a miscommunication between he & Ruiz
Ended on the ground at least 7 plays that counted.
Balance is nonexistent
No leverage
Not attacking or using his hands well at all. I still don’t understand how someone whose college game was built on “aggressive” and “bullying” has lost it in the NFL
^^I posted that last night. He also went in on the 3rd drive and did much better. I didn’t chart them, but he had a couple of nice run blocks and held up fine in pass protection on a couple. Glad to see him settle once game got going, but he’s got to start faster than that! Also not sure if defenders changed in that 3rd drive to lesser quality players or not.

I can say with conviction that at last those late round picks were not wasted on crap QBs.
How far they can go we will see.

Haener didn't have a bad night, but you can easily see Rattler has the better physical tools. He had a pretty quick release and the ball came out with velocity pretty effortlessly. Haener had to crow hop like he was throwing a Hail Mary to get the ball to Perry. Of course, there is more to being a good QB than just having good arm strength. But of the two, Rattler has more to work with

Yep. If they can stay relatively healthy the Saints probably have a top 10 front seven. A third down package with Granderson/Young at DE and Cam/Bresee at DT could be really tough to block.

Liked the fire from McKinstry, and was impressed with Gay Jr. covering the entire field with ease.
Loved the push from the defense and Young's effort seemed to be of little concern (although limited play).
Liked what I saw from A.T. Perry and Olave.
O-line was very concerning for pass protection and opening ANY holes for the run game. Williams needs to be let go....he's been absolutely useless since we signed him. Kamara didn't have any holes to hit.
Defense looked really good. Hopefully this in itself will save us from losing TOO many games.
QB play was sloppy from Carr. His throws are so lazy. Never puts any red-arse into a throw. Liked what I saw from Haener and Rattler, but again, that O-line needs SEVERE help.
