So what you are saying, Chad, is that it's better to punt the ball out the back of the end zone than to put the ball within the 20? Gotcha.

He actually makes a lot of money, especially for a punter. I think he’s at $2.5 million per year. Not exactly chump change!

Actually gets old. However, it helps his post count which we all know is the intent. Quantity over quality.

1. What FA did the Saints miss out on bc Morstead got too much money and we couldn't afford the FA?

is this where i make up names and you say no way and i say yeah way?

quote:

but seriously, shouldn't the contracts/wasted or dead money for Byrd, Browner, Ellerbee, Gallette, Graham etc garner equal or more outrage? I mean, if you are railing against contract vs value/production...

for sure. me taking a stand against our organization having the highest paid punter in the league doesn't mean i'm ok with other wasted monies. at least i'm consistent with wanting our monies spent wisely. it aint' a huge make or break deal but at some point, our front office has said "yeah, we're going to pay top dollar for an extra yard or two on punts but we're going to half arse our way through the kicker position the past 7 years that actually put or take points off the board".

quote:

3. What's the big deal anyway? The Saints have contracts currently with 53 guys they think can win the Super Bowl with by dividing up $167 million. If they win another Lombardi trophy, does it matter if Kamara got a million, Brees got $24M, and Morstead got 3.6M?

Its a legit discussion point. I choose to partake in and actually put up concrete points unlike 90% of the people that like to counter me.

People used to bitch about Reggie's contract, in that he never put up enough stats (while being used often as a decoy) to justify his lofty pay. Yet his contributions helped others make plays. I've never had an issue with stars or solid contributors getting paid. Morstead falls into that group. His production/contribution has helped our defense.

However, when money is tied up in deadbeats, injured-bench-warmers, camp-bodies-on-active-rosters and still owing traded away players on other teams...that shite pisses me off consistently.

You can be consistent in your bitching, but it shouldn't be misguided.

Why do other, current punters refer to him as a "legend"?

this is punting, this isn't difficult shite.

he's 8th in avg.
he's 6th in net.

he's not in any way even a pro bowl caliber punter yet he's paid the primo of everybody.

i mean we're talking 1.5 yards per punt of being run of the mill freaking average. crown his arse... oh man.

Tru...
Is the GOAT really relevant when its at the least important position on a team?

Name a less important position.

Longsnapper? I'll give you that if you really want.

OT, OC, OG, WR, TE, OLB, ILB, DT, DE, CB, FS, SS, K, RB...?

All more important positions to a team than a punter.

Go ahead, make a case that a punter is more important than any of those positions I listed.

I'm not saying a P isn't important, but its the least important position on a team.

If you had to take one starter on your team and replace them with an incompetant, out of shape, clueless degenerate. Choosing punter would definitely be the best choice. If you choose long snapper, then your kicker is irrelevant.

Pretty confident there’s 10 guys on every NFL roster that can punt something decent at least 40’yards

Like maybe 32 NFL GM's every year?

Wanna guess which position is drafted the least and lowest every year for the entire history of the NFL?

Its actually 3.6475 million a year, most in the league
#2 is Hekker at 3.5mil

Around 14-15th ranked is hitting 2mil, so we're paying him roughly 1.5mil more than the average punter.

Are we splitting hairs on 1.5mil when he's pretty consistent and doesn't shank punts? I can cut a player and save 1.5mil and we wouldn't miss a beat.

Hell, in bone-money logic he'd say well you'd need to spend at least 500k on the position alone as its league minimum, so you're really only saving 1mil.

A cut or trade of Thomas Morestead saves 4.15 million of pure cap space in 2018. This is his last year of his contract. I hope worst case scenario, they extend him, offer him security in an organization he loves and reduces his numbers a bit.
